The Brothers Apothecary Review

Started by two real-life brothers, The Brothers Apothecary “world’s finest CBD teas & superfoods.”

Its product lineup ranges from teas and hemp flowers, to CBD oils and CBD capsules blended with medicinal herbs. Some of the more interesting products offered by The Brother’s Apothecary are its CBD-infused wildflower honey, CBD Hemp Flower Smoking Blends, and CBD-Infused Teas.

Overall, this is one of the best CBD brands we’ve tried yet. It opts for organic, whole hemp flower whenever possible, provides extensive third-party testing, and uses clever formulas that incorporate other restorative herbs whenever possible.

This brand is well worth looking into.

Mission/Charity 5/5

The Brothers Apothecary’s mission is simple — to produce natural, wholesome CBD products and educate users. It’s not about creating the strongest CBD products, but using CBD in conjunction with other herbs to heal. Instead of using extracts, The Brothers opts for minimally processed whole hemp flower for most of its products.

Hemp Source 4/5

We love to see when companies are dedicated to hemp sourcing transparency. The Brothers Apothecary has a subpage dedicated to its in-house and third-party lab tests for its organically-farmed hemp.

We reserve 5s for hemp crops that have USDA organic certifications. However, Oregon doesn’t have USDA organic certifications available yet for hemp growers.

Product Range 5/5

The Brothers Apothecary catalog has an excellent range of CBD products tailored to suit different needs from CBD-infused teas, herbal capsules, essential oil rollers, CBD-infused honey, and smokable herbs.

Innovation 5/5

While most companies are looking to extract higher percentages of CBD from hemp crops, The Brothers Apothecary has a more holistic approach to using hemp as medicine.

The company opts for whole hemp flowers in most of its recipes to maintain the other cannabinoids and terpenes that yield their own therapeutic benefits. The blends of herbs in the teas, capsules, and smoking herbs are what make these products truly unique.

Safety 5/5

There are clear instructions outlined for its product use along with long-form blog posts relating to CBD education found on its website. CBD dosing is a personal affair, as everyone reacts to CBD differently and uses it for different reasons.

Additionally, all the third-party tests we expect to see are readily available on the company’s website.

Customer Service 5/5

The Brothers Apothecary has a standard customer service policy when it comes to refunds and exchanges. You can email its customer service team for any concerns, and with a quick turnaround, they’ll sort your requests out on a case-by-case basis.

We appreciate the customer’s service response time when it comes to questions posed on the website, social media channels, and emails.

The Brothers Apothecary Company Review

Article By
Daily CBD , last updated on October 19, 2021

About the Company: The Brothers Apothecary

Brothers Shane and Jesse Richardson started The Brothers Apothecary in 2015. It was the first CBD tea company in Portland.

The idea for the company emerged when the brothers — who share a background in natural wellness and love for cannabis — found a lack of minimally processed, wholesome CBD products on the market amongst the vape pens, gummies, and dab concentrates.

The Brothers Apothecary produces truly unique products on the market — instead of incorporating CBD extracts, it uses minimally processed, full-spectrum hemp flower in most formulations.

In over 6 years in business, the brand has expanded from teas to honey, herbal capsules, smokable blends, and essential oil blends — all of which are hand-crafted and made locally in Portland.

The Brothers Apothecary’s focus is to use hemp the way it has been used for centuries — as a herb.

Rather than extracting single compounds from the plant for concentrates, the brothers incorporate whole hemp flowers in most of its formulations for a more natural application of hemp, which is in line with its philosophy:

“Combine organic ingredients with top quality, full-spectrum hemp for synergistic therapeutic experiences.”

Based on the product formulations, it’s evident the brand understands the herbal applications of hemp and is committed to sharing that knowledge on its website with blog articles and through social media channels.

Where Does The Brothers Apothecary Source Its Hemp?

The Brothers Apothecary uses organically grown industrial hemp from Oregon, and the third-party lab results verify the hemp is indeed free from pesticides and other harmful contaminants.

While it’s not a government-regulated practice in the industry, The Brothers Apothecary prioritizes safety and quality assurance testing, which we appreciate in an industry overrun with snake oil products.

Products Offered by The Brothers Apothecary

In 2015, The Brothers Apothecary started with Hemp-Derived CBD-Infused Teas and has expanded its product line-up to include CBD-Infused Honey, Herbal Capsules, CBD Essential Oil Blends, and Hemp CBD Smoking Blends.

Let’s get into the products in more detail.

1. CBD Beverages & Teas

Hemp teas are popular as herbal, non-caffeinated beverages to unwind and relax at the end of a long day. These teas aren’t going to offer a high dose of CBD, but they’re perfect for people looking for the subtle relaxing effects of the hemp plant.

Some CBD teas are made by infusing a CBD isolate with other herbs — but not this brand. All of these teas use raw hemp leaf as the base, along with a variety of other herbal blends to support specific effects.

The CBD teas are the cornerstone of The Brothers Apothecary, so you’ll find the widest selection of flavors in this product category.

The loose-leaf teas are available in a single sachet, 3-pack, or 20 pack with approximately 60–70 mg of CBG per teabag, while the powdered teas (Mighty Matcha and Golden Milk Turmeric) contain 100 mg and 200 mg per package, respectively.

Each beverage is formulated with complementary medicinal herbs to address specific concerns from insomnia to upset stomach, anxiety, and fatigue.

These teas are available in ten flavors:

  1. Mighty Matcha Tea
  2. Golden Dream
  3. Mellow Mint
  4. Highbiscus
  5. Chai Awakening
  6. Mystic Kava
  7. Buddhas Berry
  8. Oolong Passion
  9. Sensualitea
  10. Cosmic Cleanse

The newest additions to The Brothers Apothecary catalog include:

  1. Blue Moon Milk Latte
  2. Chocodelic Trip Cocoa
  3. Peppermint Treat Cocoa
  4. Coconut Genmaicha

We’re excited to see the Cocodelic Trip Cocoa, which includes 10 medicinal mushrooms, including reishi, lion’s mane, chaga, and cordyceps, with a rich Dutch cocoa powder for a superfood beverage.

2. CBD Capsules

CBD capsules offer a simple, and effective way of using hemp. Rather than using hemp extracts, like many other brands on the market, they use whole-hemp flower. As a result, these capsules may not contain as high CBD doses compared to what’s on the market, but they’re meant for you to use hemp in its natural form alongside other medicinal herbs.

The Brothers Apothecary offers 6 unique herbal capsule formulations starring hemp-derived CBD.

Each capsule formulation addresses different health concerns and includes complimentary medicinal herbs along with coconut milk powder as a plant-based lipid the cannabinoids bind to for increased bioavailability.

The Brother’s Apothecary has six individual capsule formulas available:

  1. Immunity Support — High CBD Hemp, Turmeric, Black Pepper
  2. Sleep Aid — High CBD Hemp, Valerian Root, Chamomile, Skull Cap
  3. Super Greens — High CBD Hemp, Spirulina, Chlorella, Wheatgrass
  4. Digest Well — High CBD Hemp, Licorice Root, Ginger Root, Peppermint, Fennel
  5. Mental Clarity — High CBD Hemp, Ginkgo Leaf, Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Rhodiola
  6. Cleanse — High CBD Hemp, Wild Chaga, Dandelion Root, Activated Charcoal
  7. Supreme Vitality — High CBD Hemp, Reishi, Chaga, Cordyceps Mushrooms + 7 other mushrooms
  8. Super Citrus — High CBD Hemp, Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon, and Elderberry
  9. Butcher’s Broom — High CBD Hemp, Garlic, Butcher’s Broom, and Birch

3. Hemp Flower

Hemp flower is the rawest form of CBD you can get. After the hemp flowers are harvested, they’re dried and carefully cured to preserve the active cannabinoids and terpenes. To use hemp flowers, you can roll them up in a cigarette, add them to a dry herb vaporizer, or use them as the starting point to make your own CBD oils, tinctures, or tea.

Brothers Apothecary Hemp CBD Smoking Blends

In going back to traditional uses of medicinal herbs, The Brothers introduced its own blends of smokable herbs using only Oregon-grown hemp and several synergistic botanicals.

You can purchase pre-rolled, marijuana-free, and tobacco-free hemp cigarettes with a blend of herbs to support different uses.

  1. Relax — Hemp CBD Flower, Mullein, Mugwort, Calea, Wild Dagga
  2. Sacred — Hemp CBD Flower, Marshmallow Root, Lemon Balm, Rose Petals, Krishna Tulsi, and Mullein
  3. Peace — Hemp CBD Flower, Spearmint, Rose Petals, Lavender, Mullein, Wild Dagga,
  4. Center — Hemp CBD Flower, Mullein, Wild Dagga, Lotus Leaf, Wild Lettuce

Each package contains 6 g of herbs — 4 of which is premium CBD flower.

According to the label, there is approximately 17.27% CBD in the 4 grams of hemp — this percentage makes sense for this format of CBD. It’s difficult to get an exact mg of CBD for natural hemp flower products as every batch may vary.

To get a rough idea of the mg per container so that we can compare prices across other brands, we’ve done some math:

[4000 mg hemp] x [0.1727] = 690 mg

The two newest additions to the whole hemp flower family include:

  1. Kush Hemp Artisan Flower — contains terpenes for hints of “floral, citrus, red grape, earthy undertones, and a musky finish.”
  2. CBG Flower — CBG is known as the mother of cannabinoids. It’s most abundant in young hemp flowers and lends its effects to supporting a sense of calm and relaxation. The terpenes notes in this flower include, “floral, citrus, red grape and spice.”

4. CBD Topicals

Topical CBD products are the best option for managing chronic joint conditions, skin disorders, or any condition involving connective tissue and skin.

A) Brothers Apothecary CBD Essential Oil Rollers

The Brothers Apothecary carries 6 CBD Essential Oil Roller blends and categorizes them under “skincare” under its website.

We wouldn’t call these rollers skincare, as these products aren’t formulated to enhance the appearance or condition of the skin.

These roll-ons combine a CBD isolate with oils. They can be applied to the forehead, neck, and pulse points to gain aromatherapy benefits. The Pain Away Oil can be applied to areas that may require some mild muscle pain relief.

These essential oil rollers come in five different formulas:

  1. Pain Away — Copaiba, Marjoram, Sweet Basil, Frankincense, and Arnica
  2. Love — Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Jasmine
  3. Focus — Tangerine, Ginger, Clove
  4. Insight — Clary Sage, Ylang-Ylang, White Fir, Blue Tansy, Frankincense, Jasmine, Juniper
  5. Restful — Lavender, Marjoram, Chamomile, Bergamot, Ylang-Ylang, Valerian
  6. Unwind – Lavender, Chamomile, Ylang-Ylang, Patchouli, Frankincense, Cedar Wood

B) Brothers Apothecary CBD Buzz Balm

The Brothers Apothecary has a lip and under-eye balm made with CBD-infused coconut oil, shea butter, and sustainable beeswax.

Each tube contains 5-10 mg of CBD. This is an approximation because the recipe doesn’t use an extract.

CBD-infused coconut oil is created by combining hemp flowers in coconut oil, similar to how you can get herb-infused oils for cooking.

In terms of medicinal benefits from this topical, you won’t get much as a high concentration of CBD is needed to deliver noticeable relief — however, The Brothers Apothecary doesn’t claim this product to help with aches or pains. The recipe itself makes for a lovely moisturizing and skin-protecting balm.

C) Brothers Apothecary CBD Bath Soak

This 9 oz jar contains a blend of CBD isolate, Baking Soda, Organic Aloe Leaf, Pro-vitamin B. Zinc Oxide, Pure Flower Oils for a luxurious and relaxing bath experience to ease away muscle tension and aches and promote a night of restful sleep

D) Brothers Apothecary Renewing Rosehip Face Cream

Brothers Apothecary recommends this face cream for all skin types. However, we would like to note that one of the main ingredients in the base of this product is coconut oil, which is a highly comedogenic substance, meaning that it has the tendency to clog pores and aggravate breakouts.

If you’re someone with particularly sensitive skin or acne-prone skin, we recommend steering clear of this product on your face.

The additional ingredients in the Renewing Rosehip Face Cream include aloe leaf juice, rosehip extract, hibiscus extract, emulsifying wax, and vitamin E.

D) Brothers Apothecary Soothing CBD Green Tea Body Butter

This body butter formula features green tea extract, which is highly concentrated in antioxidants to support a youthful skin appearance along with moisturizing shea butter, jojoba seed oil, and mango butter.

This is an extremely rich butter formula, perfect for quenching dry skin, but it may leave your skin feeling a little greasy before it’s fully absorbed into the skin. Because of its 500 MG CBD content, this 6 oz jar is pricer than most body butter on the market, but it may be just what you’re looking for if you need to repair dry, cracked skin.

E) Brothers Apothecary Energizing CBD Sugar Scrub

This new product contains a blend of oils, natural sugar, and CBD isolate extract to gently exfoliate dead skin to reveal a brighter and softer complexion.

Considering the main bulk of the ingredients include, kaolin clay and sugar (which are extremely inexpensive), at $29.99, this is a pricey sugar scrub.

In terms of the overall effectiveness of CBD in a product like this, we’re not convinced it’s absolutely necessary, as you’re washing away most of the scrub and the CBD along with it before it has a chance to completely absorb onto the skin.

5. CBD Edibles

There are many different types of CBD edibles to choose from. You can get CBD-infused honey, CBD gummy candies, cooking oils, and much more. These products are more expensive on average than a simple CBD oil or capsule but offer a much more enjoyable way of using CBD. CBD edibles also make for excellent gifts.

A) Brothers Apothecary CBD Honey

Is there a more complimentary sweetener than CBD honey for your CBD-infused teas?

This is a fairly unique product offering. What makes its CBD honey unique is that it’s hand-made using rosin.

As opposed to most extracts seen on the market that use CO2 extraction or other solvents, rosin is made by pressing cannabis flowers between two hot surfaces with high pressure to extract the resinous sap from the bud.

Rosins maintain most of the cannabinoids and terpenes — which hold the majority of flavor and aroma — blended with raw wildflower honey.

It’s available in 2 oz and 4 oz jars, and flavored honey (3-pack and 5-pack).

The Brothers Apothecary has expanded its collection of honey flavors to include:

  1. Lavendar Honey
  2. Organic Wild Flower Honey
  3. Orange Turneric Honey
  4. Lemon Ginger Honey
  5. Wild Rosin Honey
  6. Hibiscus Goji Berry Honey
  7. Limited Edition Delta-8 THC Wild Flower Honey
  8. Sweet Heat Aji Limo Honey

B) Brothers Apothecary Magickal Mushroom Chocolate CBD Protein Powder

The Brothers Apothecary formulated a plant-based protein powder that includes hemp protein and pea protein as a meal supplement and workout recovery.

It contains over 10 adaptogenenic mushrooms, rich Dutch cocoa, CBD, and essential nutrients to support a balanced diet.

Each bag contains 22 servings with approximately 20 mg of CBD per beverage.

6. CBD Oils & Tinctures

All CBD companies have a CBD oil option. They’re a staple in the CBD industry for their relatively low cost, high potency, long shelf life, and ease of use.

Brothers Apothecary CBD Tincture

The Brothers Apothecary has one tincture offering called Dragons Lair made with 500 mg full-spectrum hemp extract.

Dragons Lair is a simple formula of CBD and MCT coconut oil marketed to help customers get a better night’s sleep.

What Does The Brothers Apothecary Do Well?

1. Unique Herbal Formulas

What makes The Brothers Apothecary stand out is its understanding of hemp in herbal medicine applications.

Hemp has been used for centuries for its myriad of medicinal uses. When combined with other medicinal herbs, you can better target hemp’s use for your condition and symptoms.

Instead of using isolates, The Brothers Apothecary uses hemp flower in its capsules, teas, and smokeable blends and rosin for its honey to keep in line with the company’s ethos to produce more natural applications of hemp.

2. Transparent Hemp Sourcing and Lab Tests

The Brothers Apothecary has dedicated a subpage to testing its products and educating visitors on how to understand these tests.

The hemp is proudly sourced from organic, local farms in Oregon and has been tested both in-house and with reputable third-party labs.

Safety & Third-Party Testing

As mentioned, Brother’s Apothecary does third-party testing on all its products and uses organic herbs whenever possible.

Although the company doesn’t have USDA certified organic hemp at the moment, we expect this will change in the coming years as organic hemp becomes more readily available.

You can find all Brother’s Apothecary tests on this page on their website. The company gives you detailed information on how to read these tests and offers a link to a Dropbox account that has all the recent testing for their products. This is constantly updated as new reports come in.

Unfortunately, few of these tests include heavy metal, pesticide, residual solvent, or microbial contaminant testing. Most of these tests are focused on the cannabinoid content of the sample product.

Brother’s Apothecary Shipping & Returns Policy

At this time, Brother’s Apothecary only ships to the United States — but told us they were planning on expanding to include Canada, some parts of South America, and Europe.

Within the United States, all orders are sent through priority mail and should arrive within 1–2 days.

Final Verdict: The Brothers Apothecary Is A Brand We Can Stand Behind

The Brothers Apothecary has unique product offerings with a wide range of formulations so customers can personalize their CBD supplements.

If you’re looking for a more natural and holistic approach for your CBD supplementation, we highly recommend The Brothers Apothecary capsules and smoking herbs.

It uses whole hemp flowers and a blend of medicinal herbs to better leverage the effects of CBD for the desired condition.
