Brother’s Apothecary Hemp CBD Smoking Blends Review

Aside from cannabis and tobacco, smoking isn’t a common way to use herbs anymore — but it used to be.

One of the primary ways humans would use herbs for medicine was by smoking them.

These CBD smoking blends from The Brother’s Apothecary combine raw, dried hemp flowers with other botanicals are a throwback to the old days of herbal medicine.

These blends combine raw hemp flower with a variety of other smokable herbs like lavender, mullein, mugwort, lemon balm, marshmallow, and much more. There are four blends to choose from, each formulated with herbs that help guide the effects of CBD and other hemp-derivatives. Some of them could even make your dreams more vivid or help you get to sleep.

You can roll these smokables up, pack them in a pipe, or add them to a dried herb vape.

Here, we’ll review these smoke blends and give a detailed breakdown of each one to help you decide what option is best for you.

Price/Value 5/5

The cost per gram of hemp in this mix is about $7.5. There are definitely cheaper hemp flower options available — but not when you take into account the other botanicals in this formula.

Each of these blends combines 4 grams of raw organic hemp flower with 4 grams of other botanicals to boost the effects of the hemp. These other herbs also enhance the flavor of the blend.

CBD Potency 5/5

It can be hard to assess the potency of a hemp flower because the concentration of CBD in the leaves will vary from one farm to the next, as well as one year to another. Environmental conditions, harvesting techniques, and duration of storage can all affect potency.

Not to mention, the ratio of other cannabinoids and terpenes in hemp plants can also have a big impact on the potency.

In order to remain transparent on the potency of these products, The Brother’s Apothecary does an analysis of each batch of hemp they’re using and posts it live on the company’s website.

The most recent batch registered over 17% CBD by dried weight, which is a respectable figure.

Each container of smokeable herb will provide roughly 690 milligrams of CBD, as well as a variety of other phytochemicals from the hemp and other plants in the mix.

Looking at in terms of cost per milligram brings the cost to around $0.04 per mg — which is a low price compared to other methods of consumption.

Hemp Source 5/5

The Brother’s Apothecary is one of the few companies in the United States right now using certified organic hemp.

All hemp that enters the production facility have been tested by third-party labs to assess cannabinoid and terpene profiles, heavy metal contamination, pesticide residues, and organic contaminants.

Bottom line: this is some excellent hemp.

Purpose/Uses 5/5

These smokable hemp flower blends come with four specific intended uses. There’s one for relaxation (Peace), one for promoting vivid dreaming (Relax), one for meditation (Center), and another that seems to just be going for the sense of nostalgia with a variety of ancient herb species (Sacred) — we’re not quite sure of the exact purpose for this one but love the flavor and mild euphoria.

Product Variations 5/5

When it comes to product selection, these smoke blends are some of the best yet. Most companies don’t even offer a blend, while the ones that do have just one or two options to choose from.

Additionally, The Brother’s Apothecary also sells the whole hemp flower if you’d rather just get the pure hemp and forget about the other herbs in these formulas. You can even buy raw CBG flower from this company.

Formulation/Ingredients 5/5

We’ve already given the formula of these blends a lot of credit throughout this review, you already know they get 5 stars in this category.

We’ve found the additional herbs included in each formula was thoughtful and well designed.

We also love the addition of a medicinal herb called mullein to each of these mixes to help cut the harsh sensation often produced by dried hemp flowers. This herb has long been used in pipe blends to smooth out the harshness of the smoke. Some traditional medical systems even suggested it as a preventative for coughing.

Overview: The Brother’s Apothecary Hemp CBD Smoking Blend

These blends are made with a combination of hemp and other medicinal herbs.

They come in 6-gram tins of dried herb — half of which consists primarily of hemp (over an eighth of herb per tin).

When you get your tin, you’ll open it to find the contents pre-ground and mixed, contained in an airtight bag. The aroma of these is very strong — a combination of the hemp and other aromatic herbs.

Each tin costs $29.99 per 8-gram container. The cost per gram of hemp works out to around $7.5. This also doesn’t take into account the costs of the other herbs in the formula — so we’d say these smokable hemp flower blends are a great deal overall.

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
  • Formulated with other synergistic herbs to boost the effects of the hemp
  • Sold resealable tin container to keep your smokables organized
  • Excellent cost for a pre-made smoke blend
  • Additional herbs add enjoyable flavor to the smoking or vaping experience
  • Not the cheapest form of raw hemp flower
  • Flower comes pre-ground, making it hard to assess the quality yourself

Smoking Blend Options

Let’s take a closer look at the four CBD Hemp Smoking Blends from the company and discuss what’s under the hood.

1. Sacred

The sacred blend is made with a few of the world’s most ancient herbs — plants that have a history of use older than writing itself. These include herbs like mullein, tulsi (Holy Basil), dagga, and rose. All of these herbs have spiritual uses in traditional medicine.

This blend of sacred herbs has a diverse set of benefits to offer — from relaxing and calming effects, to promoting vivid or lucid dreams while you sleep.

Key Ingredients:

  1. Hemp CBD Flower (Cannabis sativa) — organically grown in the state of Oregon
  2. Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) — a traditional North American herb often smoked for its soothing action on the lungs
  3. Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) — another soothing herb originating from Europe
  4. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) — a traditional uplifting and antiviral herb with pleasant lemon flavor
  5. Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) — a sacred plant from Eastern Asia with adaptogenic and antiviral effects
  6. Rose (Rosa spp.) — offers uplifting, even euphoric effects and adds a pleasant floral flavor to the blend
  7. Wild Dagga (Leonotis leonurus) — a member of the mint family with mild psychoactive properties, often used to enhance dreaming

2. Relax

At first glance, we thought this blend would be designed for relaxation (it’s even in the name) — but this isn’t exactly the case.

This formula contains herbs that were traditionally used to enhance dreaming, rather than being particularly soothing or relaxing. If you’re looking for something to help you sleep, check out The Brother’s Apothecary Peace blend instead.

This particular mix is a great option if you like the idea of having more vivid dreams. All of the added herbs in this mix aside from mullein have a history of use for this specific purpose.

Key Ingredients

  1. Hemp CBD Flower (Cannabis sativa) — organically grown in the state of Oregon
  2. Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) — this herb provides a gentle soothing action on the lungs and smoothes out the smoke to make it less harsh
  3. Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) — this artemisia has a lot of uses in herbal medicine, but one of the most characteristic is for inducing vivid dreams at night
  4. Calea (Calea ternifolia) — this herb from central and South America goes by the common name of Aztec dream grass for its use in spiritual settings to enhance dream states
  5. Wild Dagga (Leonotis leonurus) — this mint relative is another herb often used to promote dream states

3. Peace

The Peace blend is made with soothing and relaxing herbs like lavender, rose, and blue lotus. Spearmint is added for additional uplifting (yet relaxing) effects and to balance the flavor profile of the blend.

This is a great blend to use if your primary goal of smoking or vaping hemp is to help you sleep. We’ve found that the nightly ritual of vaping or smoking these herbs is a great way to prepare the mind for sleep at the end of the day.

For best results, stick to a regular schedule about an hour or two before bed. Over time, your body will adapt to the schedule and further improve your sleep quality.

Key Ingredients

  1. Hemp CBD Flower (Cannabis sativa) — organically grown in the state of Oregon
  2. Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) — this is addition is used in all of these formulas because it makes the smoke much more gentle on the lungs
  3. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) — this herb is most famous for its sleep-enhancing benefits thanks to some of the essential oil fractions fo the leaves and flowers
  4. Rose (Rosa spp.)  — this herb has an excellent fragrance, but also offers relaxing and mild euphoric effects when smoked or vaped
  5. Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) — the blue lotus flower is a traditional dream remedy from ancient Egypt
  6. Spearmint (Mentha spicata) — this addition gives the smoke a cooler sensation and makes the experience easier on the lungs
  7. Wild Dagga (Leonotus leonurus) — this herb is added to all formulas for its pleasant flavor and dream-enhancing benefits

4. Center

Center is a blend specifically designed to help with meditation. It’s made with a combination of pink lotus and hemp, both of which were commonly used to help monks or spiritual gurus reach deeper states of meditation. Additional ingredients like wild lettuce and mullein are added for their benefits on the respiratory system to make the smoke blend as smooth as possible.

Key Ingredients

  1. Hemp CBD Flower (Cannabis sativa) — organically grown in the state of Oregon
  2. Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) — added for its soothing actions on the respiratory tract
  3. Pink Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) — this herb has a long history of use as a spiritual guide during meditation
  4. Wild Lettuce (Lactuca virosa) — a common herb used for pain-killing and respiratory soothing actions
  5. Wild Dagga (Leonotis leonurus) — dagga is added to all formulas for its mild euphoric effects

About the Company: The Brother’s Apothecary

The Brother’s Apothecary is a Portland-based CBD company specializing in making holistic herbal formulas.

Instead of following the industry standard and focusing on isolated CBD extract oils and capsules, the company uses raw hemp flowers and full-spectrum extracts alongside other botanicals for specific applications.

For example, the company’s sleep-supportive blends feature herbs like passion flower and lavender — which work synergistically with hemp to provide even greater sleep support than CBD on its own.

The company has other formulas too, each made with its own combination of hemp and other herbs for digestion, cardiovascular health, immune function, energy, and much more.

If you’re interested in natural health supplements and holistic medicine — The Brother’s Apothecary should definitely be on your radar.

Price/Value

These smokable blends have a great value overall — but aren’t the cheapest source of CBD flower.

The best way to assess the cost of raw hemp flowers is to look at the cost per gram.

These tins contain 8 grams of herb each — 4 of which is directly from the hemp. So to calculate the cost of the hemp we just have to divide the total price by four grams — which works out to $7.5 per gram of hemp.

This is a great deal when you consider the fact that most high-quality organic hemp starts at around $8 per gram anyway, and this mixture comes with a variety of other herbs on top of the hemp.

CBD Potency

The potency of CBD is hard to assess for hemp flowers, and every batch is different. These types of products aren’t like your standard CBD oils where the active ingredient is added into the oil in specific pre-measured volumes.

With hemp plants, the CBD content will depend on the growing conditions of the specific farm and region it comes from, as well as the time of year in which it was grown or harvested.

The Brother’s Apothecary does a test of the hemp in their smoking blends to double-check the CBD content — which is posted and updated live on the company’s website.

The most recent test showed a concentration of 17.27% CBD in the dried hemp flower — which is a respectable concentration by anybody’s standards. This would mean that a single tin of this smoking blend contains roughly 690 milligrams of CBD.

Hemp Source

The Brother’s Apothecary sources all the hemp used to make these smoking blends from local farms around Oregon. They’re one of the only companies we’ve seen so far that’s been able to certify their farms as organic.

The Brother’s Apothecary Shipping & Return Policy

The Brother’s Apothecary only ships within the United States  — however, there’s been some rumors they’re going to be opening up their operations soon to Canada, Mexico, and a few countries in South America soon.

All orders are shipped priority and should arrive at your door within 1–2 days.

Unfortunately, the return policy falls a little short from this brand. You can only return items for a refund if it’s damaged or faulty. This is definitely an area where The Brother’s Apothecary could improve in the future.

Final Verdict: These Smoke Blends Are a Must-Try

We love most of the products offered by The Brother’s Apothecary. They’re made with organic hemp, and formulated with a variety of other useful herbs to make each product even better for specific applications.

These smoking blends are no different — formulated with other herbs like mullein, lotus flower, rose, lemon balm, and lavender to boost their effectiveness and add character to the flavor.

Many of these blends are designed to improve your dreams — containing herbs like dagga, calea, and mugwort traditionally used spiritually to promote vivid dreams.

Each blend has a different flavor. If you like mint flavors, go for the Peace blend. Our favorite is the Sacred blend, which has an earthy flavor backed by some punchy floral notes — it’s really nice in a dry herb vaporizer.
