Best CBD Company Reviews: Top CBD Oil Brands & Manufacturers [2022]

Blue Moon Hemp Review

Blue Moon Hemp is a Florida-based company that sells vape pens, e-liquids, shatter, tinctures (for pets and humans), and salves online and in select Canada and American dispensaries. We’ll get into what Blue Moon Hemp does well, and what this company could improve on to receive a better rating in our books.

Mission / Charity 3/5

There’s nothing that stands out for us here when it comes to the brand’s mission and charity. Blue Moon Hemp’s mission is to de-stigmatize the use of CBD by providing high-grade CBD supplements to everyone.

Hemp Source 4/5

Blue Moon Hemp sources organic hemp from Kentucky farms that use eco-friendly and sustainable farming practices. It’s not USDA organic certified but based off of 1 third-party lab test, the hemp is clear from pesticides, heavy metals, solvents, and mycotoxins.

Product Range 4/5

Blue Moon Hemp has a wide range of products from oils, tinctures, salves, gummies, and shatter. It even stocks tinctures for pets in flavors your pet will love. The Blue Moon Hemp product range could stand to benefit from increasing its range of potencies in the pet tinctures, e-liquids, and E-Blunts.

Innovation 2/5

Blue Moon Hemp tends to use confusing jargon like “nano-technology”, “entourage effect”, and “whole-plant” extraction in odd and unclear context. Blue Moon Hemp only uses CBD isolate so you won’t be getting the benefits of the entourage effect from any of its products. Once you get past the jargon and have a look at the ingredients and lab testing, you’ll find there’s nothing innovative or unique about its products you can’t find elsewhere.

Safety 3/5

Blue Moon Hemp is missing a Certificate of Analysis for the E-Blunts. Only the crystalline extract was tested for pesticides, heavy metals, and mycotoxin contamination which came back in the clear. We wish Blue Moon Hemp would take the extra step to get all its products tested for contaminants.

Customer Service 2/5

Every customer experience interaction with Blue Moon Hemp was frustrating. From unanswered emails, misguided information that didn’t match the website, and rude customer service agents on the Zendesk live chat feature on the website — it feels as though the customer service agents don’t know their own brand.

Blue Moon Hemp Company Review

About the Company: Blue Moon Hemp

It’s hard to find much information behind this company. The founder and chairman Christopher Cowart is said to have started Blue Moon Hemp in 2016 in Florida, where it is currently based today.

Upon more research, I found someone with the name John Castellano who says he’s the CEO & Director of Blue Moon Hemp in Boca Raton, Florida, founded in 2015.

We’re not sure what to think here, but it does seem strange.

Blue Moon Hemp is available for international shipping, or you can pick up Blue Moon Hemp products in select vape stores and dispensaries across Canada and the US.

Where Does Blue Moon Hemp Source Its Hemp?

Blue Moon Hemp uses organic hemp crops grown in Kentucky, USA. All products are said to be formulated in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certified facility, designed to minimize the risks involved in any pharmaceutical production.

Its extracts are made using supercritical CO2 — the gold standard in the industry for its clean, solvent-free extraction.

Although Blue Moon Hemp uses the words “broad-spectrum,” “whole-plant extract,” and “entourage effect” in its product descriptions, the third-party lab tests show the products only contain CBD isolate.

While a CBD isolate isn’t necessarily a negative, we don’t think it’s right to market it as something it’s not.

Products made with full-spectrum extracts maintain the hemp plant’s cannabinoid profile including beneficial terpenes. When taken together, the cannabinoids and terpenes can provide stronger effects than CBD can do on its own.

Of course, there are pros and cons to full-spectrum extracts and isolates.

Here is why someone might opt for isolate CBD products:

  • Cheaper
  • Consistent dosing every time
  • Sensitivity to THC even in trace amounts
  • Worried about failing a drug test
  • Cannabinoids and terpenes may interfere with other medications

Let’s talk about those lab results…

Blue Moon Hemp has a page dedicated to its third-party lab results.

The only lab test with the most complete third-party testing is the Crystalline CBD. It was tested for pesticides, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and residual toxins. The other products were only tested for cannabinoid profile and potency.

From the Crystalline CBD Certificate of Analysis — used as the extract for its newer batches of product — we’re more confident in the quality of Blue Moon Hemp’s hemp source, but we wish full testing was conducted as thoroughly for every product offering.

It’s important to regularly batch-test CBD extracts because each batch can vary from the next. Regular testing is a way to ensure quality across the products.

What Does Blue Moon Hemp Sell?

1. Topicals

Creme Blu CBD Salve

$35.00 – $59.00
Blue Moon Hemp

Blue Moon Hemp Creme Blu CBD Salve 2 – 4 oz

2.5 / 5

Total CBD: 500 – 1000 mg
Potency: 8.33 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.06 – $0.07
Extract Type: Isolate
Flavour: Natural, Eucalyptus, Limonene
THC Content: 0.0%

Blue Moon Hemp has a collection of CBD salves called Creme Blu. It’s only available in one low potency of 8.33 mg/mL in three scents — limonene, eucalyptus, and natural.

If you love the formula, you can save a bit of cash by purchasing larger container sizes.

Because of the low potency of the formula, we’re not convinced these are ideal for those looking to relieve headaches, muscle pain, or joint inflammation, as advertised.

2. Tinctures

TruBlu CBD Tinctures

$39.00 – $149.00
Blue Moon Hemp

Blue Moon Hemp TruBlu CBD Tincture 30 mL

4 / 5

Total CBD: 500 – 3000 mg
Potency: 16.6 – 100 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.05 – $0.08
Extract Type: Isolate
Flavors: Berry, Peppermint, Natural
THC Content: 0.0%

CBD oils are a CBD company’s staple. Blue Moon Hemp’s TruBlu tinctures are made using a CBD isolate in an organic hemp seed carrier oil, infused with natural flavors.

They’re available in a wide potency range from 500 mg to an ultra-high potency of 3000 mg of CBD in 30 mL dropper bottles.

As far as flavors go, you have three options — natural, peppermint, and berry. Starting from $39 a bottle, you’ll find the Blue Moon Hemp tinctures affordable.

3. Gummies

Blue Moon Hemp CBD Gummies

Because these gummies come in small quantities of 4-10 pieces, we don’t recommend them as your daily CBD supplement, but they’re a tasty way to boost your CBD dose or a great introduction to CBD.

We’re intrigued by the sleep-aid formula containing 3 mg of melatonin to help those who want to get a better night’s rest.

It’s worth mentioning here that the Certificate of Analysis for these gummies verified there is 20% less CBD in these gummies than advertised.

4. E-Liquids

Vape E-Liquids

$25.00 – $99.00
Blue Moon Hemp

Blue Moon Hemp CBD Vape E-Liquids 30 mL

3 / 5

Total CBD: 125 – 1000 mg
Potency Range: 4.17 – 33.33 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.10 – $0.20
Extract Type: Isolate
Flavors : Black Kat, Kush, Flan, Pure, Red Devil
THC Content: 0.0%

Blue Moon Hemp claims its collection of vape e-liquids are made with a rich cannabinoid and terpene profile, free from THC. However, these e-liquids are shown to contain only CBD and were not tested for a terpene profile in the third-party lab test.

While this isn’t necessarily a red flag, it’s an example of Blue Moon Hemp’s lack of transparency.

It comes in 5 flavors and 5 potencies, making it an excellent range for beginners and experienced users alike.

Its vape e-liquids could stand to benefit by including an ultra-high potency of 40 mg/mL or higher and include a line of full-spectrum CBD e-liquids with a truly rich cannabinoid and terpene profile.

5. Disposable Vape Pen

E-Blunts

We’re not big fans of these disposable vape pens. According to the Blue Moon Hemp FAQ, you can get approximately 215 hauls from the E-Blunts — which may last up to a few days with heavy use.

Don’t let the bold 560 mg mislead you. This is the total mg of oil in the product. When we spoke with the customer service rep, he clarified there is 560 mg of vapor-liquid and 12.5% of that is CBD. This can be confusing for even seasoned CBD shoppers because CBD is typically labeled in mg while vapor-liquid in mL.

We couldn’t find any information for its CoA, even after reaching out to customer service. This is a red flag for us.

6. Pet CBD Products

TruBlu CBD Pet Tinctures

$19.00 – $59.00
Blue Moon Hemp

Blue Moon Hemp TruBlu CBD Pet Tinctures 30 mL

3.83 / 5

Cost per mg CBD: $0.06 – $0.08
Extract Type: Isolate
Flavors: Tuna, Bacon
THC Content: 0.0%

Blue Moon Hemp didn’t forget about our furry friends. The TruBlu formula comes in 30 mL bottles and is available in flavors for your pets: bluefin tuna and bacon.

7. Concentrates

CBD Shatters

$39.00
Blue Moon Hemp

Blue Moon Hemp CBD Shatter 1000 mg

Total CBD: 1000 mg
Potency: 99.6%
Cost per mg CBD: $0.04
Extract Type: Isolate
Flavors: Pineapple, Blueberry, Sour Deisel
THC Content: 0.0%

As far as concentrates go, Blue Moon Hemp offers excellent shatter that can be smoked, vaped, and formulated into treats and topicals.

Blue Moon Hemp CBD Shatter is 99.6% pure CBD isolates and comes in three terpene flavors that resemble popular cannabis strains:

  • Blueberry OG
  • Pineapple Express
  • Sour Diesel

What Does Blue Moon Hemp Do Well?

Wide Range of Potencies and Flavors

We appreciate it when brands give customers options for potencies, flavors, and product sizes. This allows customers to tailor their orders to suit their lifestyles. It also allows customers to experiment with different potencies and flavors with the same brand and formula.

High-Quality Hemp Source

Although it’s not USDA-certified organic, Blue Moon Hemp has a decent hemp source. All products are made with CBD isolates made using industrial organic hemp crops from Kentucky, USA.

The most recent crystalline CBD extract Certificate of Analysis shows the hemp was tested for mycotoxins, heavy metals, pesticides, and solvent residue, which makes us more confident in Blue Moon Hemp’s hemp source.

Where Could Blue Moon Hemp Improve?

Blue Moon Hemp’s Customer Service

Our customer service experience with Blue Moon Hemp has been less than ideal. The Daily CBD team has suffered from unanswered or late emails, rude live chat agents, and information that left us with more questions than answers.

For example, we emailed customer service in regards to the ingredient list for the Creme Blu salves because the full ingredient list wasn’t listed on the website. A full ingredient list should be provided for those who may have allergies to ingredients.

Here’s part of the product description for Creme Blu “We believe that same concept applies to our proprietary essential oil compound which is composed of Emu Oil, Calendula, Grapeseed, Jojoba, Olive, Coconut and several terpenes.”

This is what a Blue Moon Hemp agent says is in the Creme Blu Natural Salve:

Ingredients: Extra virgin olive oil, vegetable oil, grape seed oil, beeswax, arnica oil, calendula oil, jojoba oil, hemp-derived CBD.

Either the agent doesn’t know what’s in the formula or Blue Moon Hemp has changed the recipe and hasn’t updated the copy on the website — either reason doesn’t paint Blue Moon Hemp in a good light.

Complete and Current Certificates of Analysis

The only complete CoA provided was for the crystalline CBD extract. This must be the extract the brand currently uses for its new batches of products, but it’s not clear. The customer service team keeps referring us to this test when I ask about missing CoAs for products — however, all batches of products should be tested for quality control.

The CoA for Blue Moon Hemp Gummies was expired, only showed cannabinoid profile and potency, and had 20% less CBD than what is listed on the package. Assuming you want to get your money’s worth from your purchase, we highly recommend you take a look at the third-party lab tests.

Safety & Third-Party Testing

Blue Moon Hemp has a Lab Results page dedicated to third-party testing for its products. The tests were conducted by Evio Labs.

This page has the Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for the following:

  • CBD Crystalline
  • Tinctures
  • Edibles
  • E-Liquids
  • Shatters
  • Pet Tinctures

All the CoAs have the cannabinoid profile and potency — however, the most complete lab result is the CBD Crystalline, which passed the tests with flying colors.

The CBD Crystalline was tested for:

  • Pesticides
  • Mycotoxins
  • Heavy Metals
  • Residual Solvents

The CBD Crystalline isn’t a product offered, but if we assume the CBD Crystalline is used to make other products, the cannabinoid profile doesn’t match the other product CoAs.

The Crystalline contains trace amounts of CBDV, while the others do not. Because of this small difference, we don’t want to assume the contaminant testing for the CBD crystalline transfers over to extracts used in the other products.

Regular batch testing is important for maintaining the quality of the products as one batch can vary from the next. We would like to see the other products thoroughly tested too.

What we think is happening here is that older batches are made with the extracts tested from 2018 and early 2019, Blue Moon Hemp now uses this CBD Crystalline extract for newer batches. The problem with this is that it’s difficult to tell which batch you end up with because it’s not labeled.

Blue Moon Hemp’s Shipping & Return Policy

Blue Moon Hemp ships internationally and the shipping costs are determined upon the destination. All US orders over $99 are eligible for free ground shipping.

When it comes to Blue Moon Hemp’s return policy, you have up to 10 days to request an exchange or return for unopened products. You must contact customer service to receive a free shipping label.

You should receive your refund between 5-10 business days minus a 10% restocking fee.

Final Verdict: Affordable CBD Products, But Don’t Expect Too Much From Its Customer Service

If you’re looking for an affordable CBD brand with a wide range of options, we don’t mind recommending some Blue Moon Hemp products.

We like its wide potency range of tinctures and flavors of shatter.

The items we think you should stay away from are the E-Blunts that don’t have any lab testing and has confusing CBD content and the Creme Blu salves that don’t have enough CBD to perform as promised.

Blue Moon Hemp can work on complete third-party lab testing and improve on its customer service for a better rating in our books. However, as far as CBD products go, these are pretty decent products for a tight budget.
