Cannimal Review

Cannimal specializes in CBD products for pets. The company offers reasonable prices, useful features such as pet-friendly pump bottles, and unique herbal formulations designed to address specific health issues of your dog, cat, or horse.

This company is one of the only places we’ve seen where you can buy CBD concentrates for pets. This is a great way to offer pets with more severe symptoms a high dose of CBD. The company uses a unique syringe-style applicator to make it as easy as possible to use these sticky resinous oils with your pet.

We really love the specialized approach this company takes with its products. By exclusively catering to using CBD with pets, the company can really tailor its products to be the best they can be — rather than simply trying to tack on pet-friendly products to an otherwise human-orientated product lineup.

We managed to score 15% off for our readers by entering the code DAILYCBD15 at checkout.

Mission / Charity 4/5

Cannimal is dedicated to helping sick pets feel better by using CBD. In fact, the only reason Erika founded the company is that her dog Eva died from an aggressive form of cancer. This shows that Cannimal has a more personal commitment to improving the lives of pets than most companies.

Having said that, we’d like to see more concrete initiatives supporting this mission, like donations to pet shelters or something to that effect.

Hemp Source 3/5

Cannimal claims to use non-GMO hemp grown in Colorado, the state with an advanced hemp industry in the United States. They provide third-party testing, but the only test included is the cannabinoid profile test — which essentially proves the final products only contain CBD and have 0% THC. This is something that’s important to consider when using CBD products with pets — but not the whole picture.

Unfortunately, the company doesn’t offer any information on the quality of its hemp and there are no lab tests available that prove these products are free from heavy metal or pesticide contamination. We’d also like to see residual solvent testing for the concentrates in their lineup.

Product Range 4/5

Cannimal has an excellent product range designed exclusively for pets. They offer CBD oils of various potency options, specially-formulated options containing other herbs and supplements, and even a pet-specific CBD concentrate.

We found it interesting that a company specializing in pet CBD products doesn’t offer any CBD cookies or pet treats. A lot of other companies are offering these types of products and we’ve found these to be incredibly useful when it comes to giving CBD to picky pets.

Innovation 5/5

Cannimal showcases its innovation with features such as the easy-to-administer pump bottle, UV-resistant Miron glass, and multi-ingredient CBD oil formulas. We see a lot of these products as being innovative in the sense that very few other companies are offering pet products like this.

Safety 3/5

Although Cannimal provides specific instructions about dosage and uses with each product, the company fails to provide sufficient third-party test results. As it stands, there are no tests for pesticides and heavy metals, and only one test for potency and THC levels.

This essentially means we have no way of confirming these products are completely safe for your pet. At this point, we have to simply trust that Cannimal does this testing on their own before turning the hemp extracts into the companies final products.

Customer Service 4/5

Cannimal offers a 2-week return policy if you’re not satisfied with its products. However, you have to pay return shipping costs. This is a downside of this company, as the standard return policy for the industry is 30 days, with some companies even offering a 90-day return policy. Most companies will also pay for return shipping on returns involving faulty products such as leaks or breaks.

We had several interactions with the customer service team from Cannimal while putting this review together, and found them to be very helpful. Only a few of our more difficult questions went unanswered. We received no response for any requests for further lab testing on some of the companies products.

Cannimal Company Review

About the Company: Cannimal

Cannimal sells a variety of CBD products specifically designed for pets such as cats, dogs, and horses.

The founder of Cannimal, Erika Valentina Doria, has over five years of experience in the cannabis industry. She launched Cannimal after treating her terminally ill dog Eva with CBD.

After Eva passed away in 2014, Erika was inspired to make it her mission to help loving pet owners boost their furry friends’ health or ease their pain.

She has worked with some of the most recognized names the animal and cannabis fields, including Cesar Milan and Charlotte’s Web.

All of Cannimal’s products are said to be made with full-spectrum CBD extracts — however, we’ve found this isn’t the case. The lab results offered on the company website indicate these products aren’t full-spectrum at all — rather, broad spectrum or CBD isolate (more on this in the safety & third-party testing section).

Let’s dive a little deeper into Cannimal’s product lineup and examine the cost, benefits, and potential uses of each.

Where Does Cannimal Source Its Hemp?

Although Cannimal claims all their products are made from non-GMO hemp grown in Colorado, there are no third-party lab test results or certifications to prove this.

It seems like Erika’s heart is in the right place, and we want to trust her, but at the end of the day, there are other companies making the same claims with more evidence to back them up.

What Does Cannimal Sell?

Cannimal sells several kinds of CBD oil as well as a concentrate. Many of their products are flavored with beef to make it easier to convince picky dogs and cats to take their supplements.

Some products contain additional herbs and other natural ingredients that work together with CBD to achieve a specific purpose, such as reducing inflammation. We love seeing the use of clever formulas from CBD companies like this.

Overall, the cost of Cannimal’s products is fairly standard for the CBD pet market, but with greater value thanks to specialized features and formulas.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the company’s offerings.

Aside from hemp extract, this formula also contains turkey tail mushroom (Trametes versicolor). This mushroom has been used in traditional medicine for centuries for an abundance of health conditions. The most notable effect of the turkey tail mushroom is its effect on the immune system — which is particularly helpful for cancer and chemotherapy — and may have other anticancer properties.

Cannimal’s founder and CEO, Erika, is a self-proclaimed third generation equestrian who has worked with horses for over a decade.

She believes CBD can also be an effective treatment for those of you looking to boost your horse’s health.

Cannimal Equine is a broad-spectrum CBD oil designed specifically for horses. This product is also safe for human consumption — it’s basically just a high potency CBD oil with apple flavoring. There isn’t much difference here between this product and other high potency CBD oils marketed for humans.

This CBD oil is administered with a pump dispenser because droppers can easily break from a horse’s teeth and cause contamination when placed back into the bottle. Cannimal also provides a syringe with this product upon request.

Cannimal’s recommended dose for horses is approximately 10% of the horse’s body weight in mg (e.g. an 800-pound horse should get 80 mg per dose), 2-3 times per day.

2. Concentrates

Cannimal Gold Concentrate

The Gold Concentrate is a full spectrum, 650 mg CBD oil concentrate in a syringe.

This product is made for animals who require a high dose of CBD to treat severe medical conditions including cancer, pain, stress, and seizures. In addition, it can also be warmed and added to existing CBD oil tinctures to improve their potency.

Each “rice grain-sized” dose will contain roughly 20 mg of CBD.

The Gold Concentrate tastes like honey and has other earthly flavors including pine, sap, and anise.

The Gold Concentrate syringe is available in a 1 gram size for $70.

Safety & Third-Party Testing

Third-party testing is a major issue for Cannimal. Although the company claims to use non-GMO Colorado-grown hemp, there are no independent lab tests to back its quality.

In fact, Cannimal offers just one third-party lab test on their website. This test only looks at the cannabinoid profile of the one batch of product. Not only is this not sufficient in proving the quality of their oils, it actually disproves some of their claims for using full-spectrum extracts.

Look at the test below. The only cannabinoid to be detected on the test is CBD, and trace amounts of CBG — this can hardly be considered full-spectrum.

What Does Cannimal Do Well?

Right off the bat, it’s easy to tell that Erika is hugely passionate about her business. She has certainly found a fantastic niche in an already saturated CBD oil market.

Erika’s past experience is also a great asset. She’s been involved in the cannabis and CBD industry since 2016, working with some of the biggest names in the game, such as Charlotte’s Web, BioCBDPlus, and Elixinol.

In addition, it’s clear that Erika is knowledgeable about and cares for pets: she has more than a decade of experience with horses, and the whole reason she founded Cannimal was the result of caring for her sick pooch Eva.

She’s even worked together with Cesar Milan, the famed Dog Whisperer.

These are all good indicators that Erika is experienced in what Cannimal is supposed to offer: high-quality CBD products for animals.

More importantly, we can see Erika’s expertise in the products themselves: they have pet-friendly features such as a pump instead of the standard dropper, beef flavoring preferred by dogs and cats, and contain additional ingredients with health benefits.

Additionally, Cannimal has an active blog presence with useful information. The company has also hosted local events and workshops related to pet health.

Where Could Cannimal Improve?

While we think Cannimal is a good option for your pet’s CBD needs, there is room for improvement. For one, the company is somewhat lacking in product options.

Currently, most of Cannimal’s products are tinctures. Tinctures are a great solution for most scenarios but it would be good if Cannimal offered other choices, such as capsules or pet biscuits as some pet owners report problems giving their pets liquid CBD. We’ve used pet biscuits from other companies and found them to be incredibly effective for picky dogs and cats.

By far the biggest room for improvement with Cannimal is in its third-party testing. We’ll cover this in more detail in the section below.

What’s most likely happening here, is the company uses a CBD isolate, and then recombines it with some of the terpenes and cannabinoids found in the hemp plant to call it full-spectrum. We’re not so easily fooled by this. We’d call these types of extract either broad-spectrum (contains some, but not all cannabinoids), or even controlled spectrum (synthetically formulated cannabinoid profiles).

Ultimately, these products are closer to a CBD isolate than they are anything else.

Final Verdict: A Decent Choice For Your Pet

Overall, Cannimal seems to be a good option if you need CBD products specifically for your cat, dog, or even horse.

The company is run by a woman who is clearly experienced with both CBD and caring for animals. This expertise shows in the products: they have useful features such as syringes and pump bottles instead of droppers to make it easier to administer CBD to pets.

However, Cannimal is not without its shortcomings. The company does not provide much information about their hemp source and has only one available third-party lab test.

Ultimately, if you can look past Cannimal’s lack of detailed information for its hemp source and third-party testing, the brand has a couple of reasonably priced, pet-oriented CBD products with excellent formula design.
