Everything about this product is well thought out. The formula contains a lot of synergy in its formula, which is aimed at reducing inflammation, easing pain, and promoting the recovery process after an injury or rigorous workout.
Additionally, the formula is broad enough in its effects to be useful for other applications as well — like other forms of joint pain, skin irritation and inflammation, and much more.

At first glance, the CBD Sports Gel is quite expensive compared to standard CBD topicals. However, this product is water-soluble which makes it easier for your body to absorb. The price appropriately reflects the strength and effectiveness of the gel.
CBD Potency 4/5
By making the product water-soluble, Ojai is able to increase the bioavailability of its CBD topical. This is suggested to increase both the effectiveness of the product and how quickly you start to feel relief from your symptoms.
Additionally, there are a lot of other synergistic herbs in the formula that may increase the overall potency of this product for its intended purpose.
With that said, 3.3 mg per mL of gel is on the mid to lower end of the potency spectrum, so we can’t give full points in this category.

Ojai Energetics Sports Gel is designed for one specific purpose — for supporting the symptoms of sport-related injury and inflammation. They’ve really optimized this product for this use, using water-soluble CBD extracts, a convenient pump dispenser, and the addition of other herbal extracts designed to speed healing and reduce pain associated with athletic injuries.

This product is highly specific. It’s aimed at addressing athletic injuries and to support recovery — something this CBD gel does particularly well. With such a specific product, it’s unreasonable to ask the manufacturer to offer a wide range of different sizes or formula options.
With that said, it would be nice to have at least one larger size or a more potent option for people who use this product often. The small bottle size only lasted us about 2 weeks of heavy use.

This product has one of the best formulas for a pain and sport-recovery topical we’ve seen yet. With 16 different herbal extracts including water-soluble forms of CBD, this is a top-notch product that makes use of plant synergy.
The only problem we have with this formula is that there could be too many ingredients. When you use this many compounds, it takes away from the strength of each compound in the formula — making each one less effective. The ideal number of ingredients in a formula like this is somewhere between 6 and 10.

This sports gel has a ton of features and an intelligent formula of nutritional and herbal ingredients — all of which we’ll cover in more detail below. This is a top-notch product with a high price tag.

The CBD Sports Gel is one of a limited range of topical products in the industry using water-soluble forms of CBD.
In its natural state CBD is a fat-soluble compound rather than water-soluble. This means that it’s easily dissolved and stored in fats, which is the reason why CBD oil is the most common CBD product on the market.
The argument for using a water-soluble CBD extract instead of a fat-soluble version is that it’s absorbed by the body faster when it can follow the path of water. We’re skeptical about this, and have tested a lot of water-soluble products both internally and externally, and found there to be very little difference.
However, this gel did have a noticeably faster onset of effects. Whether this is due to the water-soluble nature of the extract, or the inclusion of other herbs and supplements — we’re not sure.
Nevertheless, Ojai Energetics is very proud of their water-soluble format and insist it has a faster absorption time than traditional CBD topicals. They use a special technique to make their CBD water-soluble that involves encapsulating CBD molecules into tiny water droplets.
2. Synergistic Formula
This formula is quite impressive. The blend includes a variety of synergistic herbs and nutritional components designed to work together to provide fast and effective pain relief.
Some ingredients are added to boost absorption rates, like the black pepper, ginger, and lactate — this helping CBD and other herbal extracts do their job faster.

It’s hard for CBD to penetrate the skin and make it all the way to problem areas in the muscles and joints. Therefore, an increased bioavailability for topical products is important.
When you break the cost of this sports gel down in terms of cost per milligram of CBD, we get around $0.47, which is much higher than the average of around $0.20–$0.30 per mg. However, this metric doesn’t take into account the other ingredients in the formula. The cheapest topicals by this metric contain little to no other ingredients apart from the CBD.
In this formula, there are about 16 active ingredients, which brings the relative cost of the product up.
Overall, we find this product to have high value for what you’re getting. If you’re looking for purely the topical effects of CBD, there are cheaper options available.

CBD Potency
The potency of CBD is one area where this sports gel falls short. With only 100 mg of CBD per 30 mL (1 oz) bottle, the potency clocks in at 3.3 mg/mL. This isn’t too low to be effective, but normally we like to see the potency of pain-relief topicals closer to 8 mg/mL.
With that said, there’s a lot of synergy in this formula. This means the other components in the mix have similar and complimentary benefits — which in turn makes the overall effects of the CBD stronger than it would be on its own.
Additionally, the water-soluble nature of this formula is suggested to increase the effects, so smaller amounts of CBD go further than in other formulas.

Unfortunately, Ojai’s Sports Gel is only available in one size and potency.
Of course, with such a specialized product, we can’t expect there to be a wide variety of different size and potency options — however, we found this bottle didn’t last as long as we’d hoped. One of the team had an injury and was using this gel to support the recovery process. This bottle only lasted about 2 weeks and would have been nice to be able to order a larger bottle. This would be especially useful for people using the gel on a daily basis like it’s designed for.
Formula/Ingredients
This is where this sports gel truly shines. The formula consists of about 16 different herbal ingredients synergistically formulated to support pain, inflammation, and recovery of the muscles and connective tissue.
We love seeing formulas like this that use the natural synergy of herbs to provide more thorough benefits towards a specific condition.
One thing we’d like to note is that although all these ingredients are excellent, by incorporating so many of them it takes away from the potency of each one. The CBD for example, as noted above, is a lower potency than it could be in order to make room for these other ingredients. The perfect number of ingredients in a formula like this is somewhere between 6 and 10 ingredients.
With that said, we still love this formula and found it to be top-notch in terms of its effects, as well as the value of the product overall.

Final Verdict: Great Formula Justifies the High Price
Ojai’s CBD Sports Gel may be on the expensive side but the prices are justified by the intelligent formula. Each of these ingredients offers similar or complementary effects to produce stronger results overall. There are a ton of excellent anti-inflammatories in this formula, each of which working through separate inflammatory pathways. This covers a wider range of inflammatory causes and increases the chances of managing inflammation that’s evaded treatment thus far.
The same goes for the antioxidant, vulnerary (wound healing), and analgesic (pain-killing) effects of the formula.
Ojai Energetics also uses a proprietary water-soluble form of CBD to improve the absorption of the compound through the skin and into the deeper connective tissues.
If you’re looking for a topical product to help with muscle recovery after a workout, to manage pain in the joints or skin, or want something to ease muscle tension around the neck — this could be the product you’re looking for.
However, if you’re on a tight budget, or are looking for something with a stronger focus on CBD specifically, this probably isn’t the product for you.
Overall, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this product. The formula is great, the price is well-justified, and the company that makes it has strong integrity. We just wish they made a larger bottle size.
