Offers veterinarian-recommended products covered by major pet insurers
Offers products that are non-GMO, vegan, free of animal products, preservatives, SLS, gelatin, wheat, sugar, and dairy
Canna-Pet is one of the first American CBD pet suppliers to hit the market in 2015. Developed in collaboration with veterinarians, medical researchers, and scientists, Canna-Pet creates CBD products for cats, dogs, and horses.
We love that this brand is active in the animal community. It partners with organizations to raise funds for food and care for animals in shelters. In addition to this, its website is a massive resource on the topics of animal health and wellbeing.
Our only caveat with this brand is its third-party lab testing transparency. While it says its CBD extracts are tested before and after processing, it’s nowhere to be found on its website.
Mission / Charity5/5
Canna-Pet offers a 50% discount to shelters, fosters, and other animal rescue charities and is covered by most major pet insurers like Trupanion and Petplan.
This brand is committed to creating high-quality products that improve animals’ lives and educate pet owners on the benefits CBD has to offer.
Canna-Pet sources its full-spectrum hemp extract from Oregon, Colorado, Kentucky, and North Carolina. While it claims to use organic crops, there are no certifications to substantiate this claim or Certificate of Analysis for its products on the website.
Canna-Pet specializes in CBD products for cats, dogs, and horses — Although it has more products catered for dogs than any other animal.
As a pet-specific company, the product range Canna-Pet has available is fairly diverse. They even sell CBD capsules for pets which we have yet to see sold by any other brand.
Its formulas include whole-plant, full-spectrum extract for the benefit of the entourage effect. Canna-Pet believes in retaining the diverse cannabinoid and terpene profile of hemp to produce greater therapeutic benefits.
This is one of the few brands we’ve come across that prioritize full-spectrum CBD extracts over isolates because of its holistic approach to CBD supplementation.
Canna-Pet provides extensive information on the benefits of CBD with detailed instructions on how to dose your pet.
None of the products sold by Canna-Pet contain active THC and all are safe to use with your dog, cat, or horse.
Canna-Pet typically responds to customer queries within 24 hours and the answers are well executed and answered all of our questions without an issue.
Returns come with a 30-day requirement and take roughly 14 more days to issue.
Canna-Pet made its debut in 2013, claiming to be the first and only producer of legal, veterinarian-recommended, non-prescription hemp products for animals.
While it’s not the only producer of hemp products for animals, it was one of the first companies that catered to pets in collaboration with veterinarians on the US market.
The Canna-Pet mission is “providing pet owners with organic, ethically-sourced products to help their beloved companions live healthier, happier, and longer lives – and ease their own worries, concerns, and fears about their pets’ health.”
Where Does Canna-Pet Source Its Hemp?
Canna-Pet uses organic American grown hemp. Thanks to the implementations of the US Farm Bill, Canna-Pet sources its hemp from multiple farms across the US, including Oregon, Colorado, Kentucky, and North Carolina. It’s currently speaking with 27 other American farmers moving into hemp production.
CBD pet oils are the simplest way of using CBD with your dog, cat, or horse. You can add these oils to their food or drop it directly into your pet’s mouth for faster onset of effects.
The main difference between a CBD pet oil and regular CBD oils is the flavor and potencies offered. Dogs, and especially cats are much smaller than humans, so it’s wise to use a CBD oil that has a lower potency to avoid going overboard.
Canna-Pet makes CBD oils in animal-appropriate potencies and offers guidance on which CBD oil to choose for your animal based on their weight.
This oil is categorized under CBD for Horses, but you can administer CBD to your cats and dogs, too — make sure to dilute the oil for smaller doses.
There is only one size of the MaxCBD oil available — 10 mL with 680 mg of CBD.
We found this product problematic in that the ingredients list this as 100% pure hemp CBD oil — it does not contain a carrier oil.
It specifies “No alcohol, no carrier oils, and designed for direct absorption in the mouth.”
This statement is clearly not true. The thin consistency of this product tells us there is a carrier oil in the formula. A concentrated, pure CBD oil is a sticky, sappy texture and costs well over the asking price of these products.
For reference, Real Scientific Hemp Oil sells concentrated CBD-hemp oil starting at $69.00 for 3 g of product. It’s in a syringe to efficiently administer the sticky resin.
The formula is most likely CBD extract in hemp seed oil. Hemp seed does not contain cannabinoids or terpenes, but it is rich in omega 3 and essential fatty acids.
As a highly concentrated product, the 10 mL bottle should last 20-30 days (depending on the frequency of use). We weren’t able to get a comment from Canna-Pet on this as they did not respond to our emails specifically in regards to this.
2. CBD Dog Treats
There’s no easier way to give CBD to dogs than a delicious CBD dog treat. They provide a standardized dose of CBD for every treat just like a CBD gummy or CBD capsule for humans.
Canna-Pet makes a few different CBD dog treat formulas, each with its own unique formula and flavor.
Perhaps the easiest way to administer CBD to your pets is by disguising it in a treat, and Canna-Pet has you sorted for flavors and potencies with its organic pet treats.
Canna-Pet has a list of reasons pet owners use Canna-Pet CBD Dog treats, including:
Digestive and Nausea issues
Anxiety and phobias
Arthritis and joint pain
Overall pain relief
Joints and mobility
Chronic pain and inflammation
Epilepsy and seizures
Aging and wellness
Loss of appetite
Skin and coat
This statement may prove to be problematic in Canna-Pet’s marketing as the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are cracking down on how CBD supplements are marketed. CBD companies cannot advertise their products to cure, treat, or mitigate diseases — doing so may result in fines or shutdowns.
The Advanced Biscuits come in three flavors:
Peanut, Banana, and Apple
Each box contains 37-40 biscuits (8 oz. 227 g) and contains 2.4 mg of CBD per treat.
If you need a stronger option, Canna-Pet has the Advanced MaxCBD treats in Maple Bacon, with three times more CBD in the box.
These treats are made with all human-grade organic ingredients and are free from nasty additives and fillers commonly found in dog treats.
3. CBD Pet Capsules
It’s rare to find capsules for pets — mainly because it’s often more difficult than it’s worth to use this method.
We recommend sticking to CBD oils or pet treats instead to avoid making your dog or cat more uncomfortable than they need to be.
The Canna-Pet Advanced Formula capsules come in two potency options for small or large pets. The formula consists of a fine full-spectrum hemp powder that contains a range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and natural flavonoids in clear vegetarian capsules.
Canna-Pet recommends mixing these capsules into your pet’s food or concealing the tablet into a soft treat.
Canna-Pet has you covered for extra-strength options that come in packs of 30 pills with 30 mg CBD per capsule.
This is one of the most potent CBD pet supplements we’ve come across for cats and dogs. The 30-pack of capsules comes at an excellent value at only $0.06 per mg of full-spectrum CBD.
What Does Canna-Pet Do Well?
1. Canna-Pet Website Is An Excellent Resource on CBD For Pets
Canna-Pet is a brand created by animal lovers and experts. Its blog is an excellent resource for pet health, written by animal experts and backed by research.
2. Specialized Pet Products For All Sizes
As opposed to purchasing CBD pet products from brands that mostly cater to humans, you’ll have more selection and specialization with a pet-specific brand.
Canna-Pet has CBD product options for cats, dogs, and horses with varying potencies to best suit your pet’s dosing requirements for the best value.
3. Pet-Insurance Approved
Canna-Pet products are the only CBD products you can claim through your pet insurance if you have Petplan and Trupanion (with a veterinarian’s recommendation).
Safety & Third-Party Testing
Canna-Pet says it’s committed to providing the best products for our furry companions. While it does an excellent job offering dosing information and product recommendations according to your pet’s specific ailments, it lacks the third-party lab tests to back up its high-quality claims.
Third-party lab testing help to protect consumers from purchasing potentially dangerous products. These tests ensure the product has the advertised potency and are free from harmful contaminants (pesticides, heavy metals, microbes, and solvents) that could cancel out any positive effects CBD could provide.
Canna-Pet’s Shipping & Return Policy
Canna-Pet ships everywhere in the world, except for the following countries:
Canna-Pet simply asks that you give its product a chance for an entire month or also known as “Take theCanna-Pet Challenge.” After using the product for a minimum of 30 days, then you may be entitled to a return.
However, a quick look into the fine print outlines that the offer does come with some limitations.
This guarantee is only valid until the end of 2019, limited to only on the first order made with them, only to a maximum of up to $100, AND all shipping and handling charges deducted.
Final Verdict: Vet-Approved, But Lacks Vital Information
Overall, Canna-Pet looks to offer an excellent range of products for cats, dogs, and horses.
It also has the added benefit of being eligible for coverage by your pet insurance, if recommended by a veterinarian.
Although Canna-Pet offers a ton of information on their website, it all proves to be a tough task navigating through it all for specific information — like its products’ Certificate of Analysis it claims to have but does not post anywhere.
We don’t recommend CBD oils as there’s not enough information about them to justify the price, and we’re not convinced the products are pure CBD concentrates.
