Cannuka CBD Soothing Skin Balm

Cannuka’s CBD Soothing Skin Balm makes for a great cocktail of skin-nourishing and hydrating ingredients. The proprietary formula — CBD and Manuka honey — make for the base, while rosehip oil, grapefruit extract, hemp seed oil and more are added for support.

The CBD Soothing Skin Balm is a great cosmetic product, albeit expensive, but definitely isn’t designed for those using CBD therapeutically.

Price/Value 3/5

The price might be appropriate for a cosmetic product but definitely doesn’t stack up for CBD value if that’s what consumers are looking for with this product.

It is an expensive product, especially if the CBD potency is included in that thought.

CBD Potency 2/5

The CBD potency sits at just 1.04 mg/mL, making it extremely low potency — definitely not enough to be considered remedial. However, cosmetically, users might feel some benefits from this CBD potency.

Hemp Source 3/5

Cannuka doesn’t advertise or mention the source of their hemp, nor the source of their CBD isolate. After snooping around, we found their isolate comes from Advanced Plant Processing in Colorado. Even still, this company doesn’t advertise the source of their hemp.

Purpose/Uses 4/5

While we wouldn’t ever call this a therapeutic CBD product, it isn’t advertised that way. It is advertised to be used on cracked or dry skin, without any mention of pain relief or skin conditions. In this way, the product does exactly what Cannuka says it does.

Product Variations 3/5

There’s only one kind of CBD Soothing Skin Balm at Cannuka. They do not create variations for any of their products. However, they stock a whole range of CBD skin cosmetics, so in some way, the products can be seen as variations of each other.

Formula 5/5

It’s the best formula Cannuka has on offer. The reason for the lower score is that Cannuka copies this formula in the CBD Calming Eye Balm and the CBD Lip Balm, so we question their creativity and innovation.

Cannuka CBD Soothing Skin Balm Review

Article By

“Let the soothing begin” is the motto that Cannuka uses to open up the conversation about their CBD Skin Balm. Cannuka combines the cosmetic properties of both CBD and Manuka honey in their entire range, including this skin balm.

While the CBD Soothing Skin Balm has a great ingredient list that definitely makes for some skin-soothing, the CBD content is desperately low for the cannabinoid itself to do much work. However, with that in mind, there are many other ingredients in the jar that make it a good balm.

Cannuka’s products are expensive overall, but the CBD Skin Balm is particularly costly. A tiny 48 mL jar costs $58. That makes it expensive both in the world of cosmetics and the world of CBD.

Keep reading this review for a price and potency breakdown of Cannuka’s CBD Skin Balm, along with some information about Cannuka itself and their most appropriate target audience.

Overview: Cannuka CBD Soothing Skin Balm

Cannuka’s CBD Soothing Skin Balm is far from being a sophisticated CBD product. It leans more towards being an expensive cosmetic product that includes some CBD.

Overall, the recipe is fantastic and is made from nature-derived ingredients like Manuka honey, CBD, rosehip oil, and Vitamin E. There are multiple ingredients in the skin balm that make it conducive to skin nourishment and soothing. It’s the low CBD potency and the small volume of balm that makes this product a little too expensive.

It’s hard to decide exactly who this product is for. Most likely, this product is designed for those searching for a well rounded cosmetic product. In general, those who are looking for therapeutic CBD need a greater CBD potency than what this product can offer.

It’s also unfortunate that Cannuka has used this same recipe in their CBD Calming Eye Balm and their CBD Lip Balm. For that reason, we can’t tell what makes the products differ in terms of the way they are used. They are more or less the same but wrapped in different packaging.

On first look, Cannuka’s CBD Soothing Skin Balm looks like a great, well-rounded product, and in many respects it is. But with a little closer inspection, Cannuka seems to be somewhat untrustworthy, especially in the fact that they copy formulas for different products. It’s also unnecessarily expensive for what it is.

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
  • Manuka honey and CBD make for a great, skin-nourishing cocktail of ingredients
  • Made with natural bases
  • CBD potency is low, making it more cosmetic than therapeutic
  • It’s expensive
  • The formula is copied from other products in the Cannuka range

Key Features & Benefits

1. CBD and Manuka honey

One thing that makes Cannuka’s range unique is the combination of CBD and Manuka honey that they use in their products. Both are well known to be nourishing for the skin, and while CBD’s benefits for the skin have only been popularized recently, Manuka honey has been used for skin healing for centuries.

The two together make for quite a cocktail when it comes to skin health. They complement each other in a way that each ingredient potentiates the other.

2. The ingredients are truly natural

The CBD Soothing Skin Balm is genuinely made with natural ingredients. The only chemical ingredient in the product is potassium sorbate, a preservative with a generally safe profile. It is necessary for Cannuka to use some preservative in a product made otherwise entirely out of natural ingredients.

3. Herbs that serve a purpose

It’s also nice that Cannuka has bothered to include a variety of ingredients that all serve the same purpose. This makes for an excellent product in terms of effect, rather than being heavily concentrated with one single ingredient. Overall, the recipe is a powerhouse for skin, including the benefits of a whole range of herbs such as rosehip, grapefruit, orange and of course, CBD and Manuka!

About the Company: Cannuka

Cannuka was founded by Ohio couple, Michael and Kelly Bumgarner. Kelly is a dermatologist, bringing her expertise of skin-related issues to the company. Michael, on the other hand, is a self-proclaimed CBD enthusiast. Together, the two saw an opportunity for a CBD cosmetic product.

Aside from this, which is information that can all be found on Cannuka’s “Our Story” page, there isn’t much else to know about the company. They are not affiliated with a charity, nor do they participate in activism or research surrounding cannabis or CBD.

Furthermore, the company is secretive about the source of their ingredients. They do not advertise the source of hemp, nor the source of CBD isolate used in their products. However, we did some fishing around and found that their CBD isolate comes from Colorado CBD manufacturer, Advanced Plant Processing. Even this company doesn’t advertise where their hemp comes from. When we asked them about their hemp source via email, they never responded.

Who Should Consider Using CBD Soothing Skin Balm?

The person best suited for Cannuka’s CBD Soothing Skin Balm is a person searching for an interesting cosmetic product. It is not suited to somebody wanting to treat a skin condition or muscular pain with CBD. The CBD potency is too low for the product to meet those needs.

That’s not to say the product can’t be used to treat skin conditions. It contains a myriad of ingredients that could be beneficial for someone with eczema or dermatitis, but CBD cannot be considered the primary, active ingredient.

Price/Value

This is one of Cannuka’s most expensive products and has one of the smallest CBD concentrations in their range. It’s something for consumers to think about before buying this product.

CBD Potency

As mentioned, the CBD Soothing Skin Balm can’t be compared to other therapeutic CBD skin products, because it doesn’t feature CBD as a primary ingredient. The potency doesn’t stack up compared to remedial CBD topicals, but perhaps it’s enough for somebody just looking for a cosmetic product.

Hemp Source

Cannuka makes no mention of the hemp source on their website, so we went snooping around. The company does provide a certificate of analysis for the CBD isolate used in its products, supplied by the manufacturer, Advanced Plant Processing. The company is from Colorado, but they make no specific mention of the hemp source on their website.

We tried to email Cannuka about the source of their hemp, which they never replied to. So while the company passes the test for heavy metals, pesticides, and residual solvents, nobody knows where the hemp is grown. Plus, the certificate of analysis is provided by the manufacturer, not a third party.

Purpose/Uses

Cannuka says that this product is made for reducing dryness and cracking, making it pretty much exclusively cosmetic. The company doesn’t ever suggest this product to be used therapeutically, and neither do we.

The CBD Soothing Skin Balm is an all-over body and face balm that packs a nourishing, hydrating punch. The ingredients support this purpose, but the CBD potency is too low for the product to be considered remedial.

Formulation/Ingredients

Key ingredients of the CBD Soothing Skin Balm include:

  • CBD isolate (50 mg)
  • Manuka honey
  • Distilled water
  • Beeswax
  • Shea butter
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Hemp seed oil
  • Rosehip oil
  • Vitamin E
  • Orange peel butter
  • Coconut oil
  • Grapefruit extract
  • Potassium sorbate

The ingredients are so sound for this recipe; it can virtually be purchased at a health food shop. This is what makes this product appealing to those searching for a genuinely natural cosmetic product.

The winners of this formula are CBD, manuka honey and grapefruit extract. They are great ingredients for the skin, especially for irritated or dry skin. On top of that, the bases used are entirely natural, hydrating, and full of good fats — hemp seed oil, coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax, and orange peel butter.

However, nowhere is it advertised precisely how much Manuka is in the product — and we find this a little bit misleading.

Cannuka’s Shipping & Returns Policy

Although Cannuka offers a full customer satisfaction guarantee, we anticipate difficulties with actually fulfilling this. Customers can send back the remainder of an opened product in exchange for a credit or refund in the case they aren’t 100% satisfied. However, judging by how unresponsive Cannuka was to emails, this might be difficult to achieve.

Cannuka also offers a replacement for goods that arrive damaged or defected. This also should be done through the customer service team.

Shipping is available worldwide, with costs depending on the country. In the USA, there is a flat rate of $7.50, but shipping can cost as much as $87 internationally. Shipping is calculated at checkout.

The Final Verdict: CBD For Beauty, Not For Health

Overall, Cannuka’s CBD Soothing Skin Balm is a great product, if it were only a little bit cheaper. Customers should understand that they are not necessarily paying for CBD or for Manuka honey, but for Cannuka’s entire branding. The product is cosmetic and is made to be used that way, and for that reason shouldn’t be purchased as a CBD product per se.

Aside from that, the product has a great ingredient list and might be a great product for skin hydration. There are probably cheaper products on the market that serve this exact purpose, but nonetheless, the formula is sound.
