Kat's Naturals Activated Hemp Flower

Kat’s Naturals uses top-notch hemp in its products. Now you can buy Kat’s Naturals’ hemp flowers to add to your cooking, mix in with smoothies, or use as a base to your DIY CBD products at home. Each package contains decarboxylated (heat-activated) dried hemp flowers with MCT coconut oil to increase its bioavailability. This is perfect for those who prefer using the most natural form of hemp or have an interest in making their own DIY hemp products.

Price/Value 4/5

There’s nothing else like this product on the CBD market, so it’s difficult to accurately compare the Activated Hemp to other brands. Overall, we think $0.06 per mg of CBD is a fair price for a whole flower product considering the average of CBD oils ranges from $0.07 – $0.17.

That being said, this product is way too expensive to use as a daily CBD supplement. If you’re cooking with CBD or formulating your own topicals, this is a reasonable price point. We wish Kat’s Naturals offered a discount for purchasing larger quantities in the 8 oz package.

CBD Potency 4/5

Kat’s Naturals recommends a serving of 1 teaspoon of its Activated Hemp added to your food or smoothie. One serving contains 28 mg of CBD. This is a medium potency for a daily CBD dose. With a whole plant product, you’re getting a natural profile of cannabinoids and a more holistic way to get your CBD.

Hemp Source 4/5

Kat’s Naturals sources its hemp from multi-generational organic hemp farms in Southeastern USA. The hemp source has been third-party lab tested. However, it’s not certified organic because Tennessee doesn’t offer USDA organic certifications yet, so we can’t give Kat’s Naturals a 5/5.

As far as hemp source goes, this is one of the best you can come across. The Certificate of Analysis was provided proved the flower is free from pesticides and heavy metals.

Purpose/Uses 5/5

The Activated Hemp is a unique product because we see its potential for a variety of uses from sprinkling it into your salads to creating your own gummies and creams. It’s marketed as a general food supplement you can add to your food. However, this product could be used to make any CBD product you wanted at home — as long as you can find the recipe for yourself.

Product Variations 3/5

The only options available for the Activated Hemp are 2 different package sizes. You can purchase the 1-ounce or the 8-ounce package. Regardless of which size you select, it will cost the same per mg of CBD ($0.06) and it will contain an estimated 336 mg of CBD per ounce. This is one of the few companies even offering a product like this so we’re not surprised about the lack of variations.

Formula/Ingredients 4/5

This is a fairly straightforward product — it’s decarboxylated hemp flower. Kat’s Naturals could have sold the dry flower on its own, but what we appreciate about this formula is the inclusion of MCT coconut oil. Cannabinoids are fat-soluble, meaning it readily binds to fat. When cannabinoids are bound to fat, it increases its absorption through ingestion. It also makes it easier to work with since most of the time you’re going to want to add a fat source to dried hemp flower before using it anyway.

Kat's Naturals Activated Hemp Review

We can see a variety of uses for Kat’s Naturals’ Activated Hemp. The product description says the activated hemp is “great for people who have trouble holding drops [of oil] under the tongue. Can be added to smoothies, granola or any baked good.”

Kat’s Naturals is founded by a nutritionist and herbalist, so this product offering does make sense for its niche. Whole hemp flower is excellent for those looking for a more natural way to add CBD into their lifestyle as it’s minimally processed. Rather than dealing with high concentrations of CBD, you can use CBD in the way nature presents it, as a herb.

We’ll give you some ideas of what you can use hemp for (other than sprinkling in your smoothies), and you can decide for yourself if Kat’s Naturals Activated Hemp will make a valuable addition to your health regimen.

Overview: Activated Hemp

Hemp is a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant grown for its fiber in industrial textiles and for its medicinal uses for its high CBD and its low THC (the psychoactive compound) content.

The flower is what’s harvested and processed for hemp extracts high in CBD. This product, therefore, is the more natural form of CBD supplementation.

The ‘activated’ in the name means the flower has been decarboxylated — heat-activated — this chemical reaction removes a carboxyl group and releases carbon dioxide. In doing this, you transform some cannabinoids into a more biologically active state.

For instance, you need to apply heat (burning, cooking, vaping) to the marijuana flower to transform the compound THCA into THC in order to activate its psychoactive properties for the high.

In the case of hemp flowers, heat is applied to transform CBDA into CBD. While CBDA has many therapeutic benefits of its own, CBD is more bioavailable. This means it’s more reactive to our bodies.

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
  • Holistic way to supplement CBD
  • Versatile uses
  • Great for DIY projects
  • Will not give you the same potency as CBD extracts
  • Some may not like the grassy, fibrous consistency of this product when added to smoothies
  • Difficult to get exact doses of CBD

Key Features & Benefits

1. The Activated Hemp is Full-Spectrum

Whenever shopping for extracts, we prefer full-spectrum products.

CBD is not the only therapeutic compound found in hemp. When you keep the other compounds in the finished product, the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other phytonutrients work in synergy to produce greater effects than CBD can produce on its own — this synergy is called the entourage effect.

Being a whole flower product, there isn’t a way to isolate cannabinoids as no extra processing, beyond decarboxylation, has been applied.

These hemp CBD flowers maintain its range of cannabinoids, phytonutrients, and terpenes — it’s naturally a full-spectrum product.

We’re not sure adding “full-spectrum” to the product description adds any value other than it being a buzzword to look for in quality CBD products.

This is similar to rice packaging with “gluten-free” labels — there’s no gluten in rice, to begin with — and there’s no processing involved to eliminate cannabinoids in this product. Hemp flower is inherently full-spectrum.

2. Hemp Flowers Are Versatile

Capsules and oils more are cost-effective for reaching a higher dose. However, you can find more creative uses for hemp flowers.

The product description page recommends this product for people who don’t enjoy the taste of sublingual oils. You can sprinkle the flower into food and smoothies — but I’d rather slightly bitter oils over chunky smoothies any day.

Hemp flower is perfect to crafty CBD users looking to make their own topical formulas (salves and creams) or infusing into butter for baked goods.

In fact, there are many different uses for hemp flower. It’s a shame Kat’s Naturals gives such uncreative uses for this product.

About The Company: Kat’s Naturals

Kat’s Naturals was founded by Kat Merryfield in 2015, who applied her knowledge of herbalism and nutrition to create a CBD formula to help her husband relieve symptoms of stress after serving 13 years in the military.

Still based in Tennessee — where Merryfield first started her botanical formulations — Kat’s Naturals offers CBD products to improve the quality of people’s lives. The brand is deeply involved with veterans programs, donating a portion of its profits to the Atlanta Organization Operation Rally Point and developing products with veterans in mind.

Who is Kat’s Naturals Activated Hemp For?

Activated hemp is perfect for those looking for a more natural, holistic way to add CBD into their health regimen. It’s also ideal for those looking to make their own edible and topical CBD formulas.

This is a minimally processed product. The “decarboxylation” or heat activation is necessary to transform the hemp plant’s natural cannabinoid CBDA into the more bioavailable cannabinoid, CBD.

Because you’re dealing with a whole plant product rather than a concentrated product, you’ll receive a more diverse cannabinoid and terpene profile, which may vary from batch to batch — phytochemical compositions naturally vary from plant to plant.

This also means you will need a lot more of the product to reach the same potency from an extract, which can become expensive. If you’re someone who requires a high CBD dose, we recommend you use CBD capsules or oils from concentrates to reach your desired dose and supplement with Activated Hemp when needed.

Price/Value

Activated Hemp is a unique product offering, and we don’t have any other brands to compare its price to.

A baseline metric we like to look at is the cost per mg of CBD contained in the package. This isn’t always the most accurate metric, as there are many different factors that go into pricing (third-party lab tests, ingredients, and donations to community programs), but this gives us a reasonable starting point.

Kat’s Naturals’ Activated Hemp contains 336 mg of CBD per oz and it’s sold in 1 oz and 8 oz packages.

Ordering in the larger size doesn’t change the cost per mg of CBD — it would be ideal if Kat’s Naturals could offer a slight bulk discount.

Cost Breakdown of Kat’s Naturals Activated Hemp:

Product NameTotal PriceTotal CBD ContentCost per mg CBD
Activated Hemp — 336 mg (1 oz)$20.00336 mg$0.06
Activated Hemp — 2688 mg (8 oz)$150.002688 mg$0.06

To compare this product to extracts such as concentrates, tinctures, oils, and capsules is a little tricky.

Extracts concentrate the phytochemicals of the plant, eliminating the plant matter.

When you’re dealing with extracts, it’s much easier to precisely measure the cannabinoid content and CBD potency consistent throughout products.

The cost of extracts will vary from $0.05 to $0.17 per mg of CBD.

Another benefit of extracts is that the concentration of CBD and other cannabinoids are much higher. You’ll use much less of the product to achieve the appropriate dose.

For example, 1000 mg strength tincture (30 mL bottle) has a potency of 33 mg/mL. 1 mL will deliver a medium-strength dose.*

*Your dose will vary depending on a number of factors. To get started on finding your ideal dose, we’ve put together a Beginner’s Dosing Guide for CBD Oils.

Making DIY CBD Topicals to Cut Costs

Activated Hemp is an excellent ingredient to use if you’re looking to make your own lip balms, salves, and creams.

The hemp comes already soaked in coconut oil — all you need to do is warm it up to slightly above room temperature, and strain out the hemp — leaving behind freshly infused coconut oil ready to add to whatever lotion, cream, or balm recipe you want.

Price Comparison of CBD Topical Products:

Cheap $0.09 – $0.25 per mg CBD
Average $0.26 – $0.36 per mg CBD
Expensive $0.37 or more per mg CBD

At $0.06 per mg of CBD, the Activated Hemp is priced reasonably if you’re looking to experiment with your own CBD recipes.

CBD Potency

Kat’s Naturals recommends 1 teaspoon sprinkled into a smoothie or your favorite dish.

We’re not sure what happened to this product description, but the information on Kat’s Naturals displays different potencies for the Activated Hemp.

One section says it contains 28 mg of CBD per teaspoon, but when you scroll down, it says “1 tsp has approx. 9 mg CBD and 0.3% THC.”

This is a bit odd, so we reached out to Kat’s Naturals who informed us that each teaspoon contains an estimated 28 mg of CBD.

We want to emphasize estimated because it’s very difficult to standardize dosages of CBD in flowers because the cannabinoid content can vary from one teaspoon to the next and one crop to the next.

28 mg serving is a fair daily CBD dose if you’re after a medium strength product. If you’re looking to use the Activated Hemp as your daily supplement, it can get expensive. The 1-ounce package for $20 contains roughly 6-8 teaspoons.

We recommend you supplement this product with capsules or tinctures to reach a higher potency if required.

Hemp Source

Kat’s Naturals sources its hemp from three Southeastern American farms that specialize in organic hemp.

Unfortunately, Kat’s Naturals doesn’t have the organic certifications for its hemp because not all states are eligible for USDA certifications.

We’ve found most of Kat’s Naturals’ products had complete Certificate of Analysis (CoA) conducted by third-party labs that tested for the cannabinoid and terpene profile, and the presence of hazardous materials and contaminants. However, this product’s CoA only shares its cannabinoid profile on the product description page.

We reached out to the Kat’s Naturals customer service team who promptly provided us with the following CoAs:

The Activated Hemp passes with flying colors. We just wish Kat’s Naturals would share this information on its website.

Purpose/Use

This product can serve many different purposes. Kat’s Naturals recommends you add it into smoothies, granola, and baked goods. And it’s great for pets. Sprinkling hemp flower into your furry friend’s meals will help them get a little extra fiber along with the benefits of CBD.

You can also use the Activated Hemp to make your own CBD-infused butter/ coconut oil for cooking and create your own topical creams, lotions, ointments, and salves.

Formula/Ingredients

Activated Hemp is pretty self-explanatory — the flower itself has many beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes, and phytonutrients, but we appreciate that this product includes MCT coconut oil.

While coconut oil does have its own health benefits, you’re not taking this product for the coconut oil’s fatty acid content. There simply isn’t enough per serving to receive its effects as a supplement.

The MCT coconut oil’s purpose in this recipe has more to do with facilitating our ability to absorb the cannabinoids.

Cannabinoids are fat-soluble, so it readily binds to the coconut oil, making the CBD more bioavailable through ingestion.

Kat’s Naturals’ Activated Hemp is a unique product offering with the potential for many uses.

I wouldn’t recommend this as a replacement for CBD extract supplements (oils, tinctures, capsules) because it’s not cost-effective as a daily supplement, especially if you’re treating symptoms or managing a condition.

The Activated Hemp is better suited for the crafty CBD users who are interested in creating their own formulas for edibles and topicals. You won’t find anything else like this on the market.

We’re disappointed that Kat’s Naturals missed the mark on providing complete third-party lab results for this product, and had wrong information of how much CBD is in each serving — this is a rookie mistake, and we know Kat’s Naturals has the capability to show us better because we’re a big fans of its products.
