The Active Relief Roll-on is one of the many CBD topicals offered by HempMeds. Frankly, this is a mediocre product that doesn’t have enough CBD to provide the advertised effects.
This topical contains 45o mg of CBD and comes in a 90 mL bottle. While users might feel a gentle cooling sensation after applying this roll-on on the affected area, we wouldn’t expect this product to offer many of the benefits attributed specifically towards CBD.
The cost per mg of CBD is $0.11 — which is average on the market. However, there are lots of CBD topicals carrying higher concentrations of cannabidiol, and formulated with better ingredients than this one.
The addition of menthol isn’t enough to make up for the lack of sufficient potency.
HempMeds Active Relief Roll-on is made with 450 mg of CBD in a 3 oz container — bringing the potency to around 5 mg/mL.
The company used to sell another version of this that had just 10 mg CBD in a 2.5-ounce container — which had a potency so low it was completely negligible when applied to the skin. Fortunately, HempMeds has since discontinued this ultra-low potency 10 mg option.
HempMeds uses non-GMO hemp plants imported from European farms. The plants are tested throughout the growing season and after harvest to ensure they’re free of heavy metals and other chemicals.
HempMeds uses a triple testing procedure to offer as much transparency as possible for its products. This is a step above what most CBD companies are currently doing in terms of product testing and analysis.
The Active Relief Roll-on is marketed for use on sore muscles and joints. The cooling action is well-suited for this application. However, we feel the potency of CBD used in this formula is too low to back up the benefits this company advertises more than very mild symptoms.
There are much better products in this category from companies like Royal CBD and Medterra.
The Active Relief Roll-on is available in just one size and potency. The company used to sell another version, but the potency was even lower than the current option.
Although we don’t expect there to be a wide range of options for topicals like this, we’d have liked to see a warming option or a version of the product with a higher potency.
The concept for this product formula is excellent — but it falls apart in practice.
HempMeds implies this product as a topical for joint and muscle pain. Additions such as menthol that gives this gel a cooling effect add to the intended use of this product. The company has also added peony and licorice extracts for their effects on peripheral blood flow.
Additionally, this product comes in a convenient roll-on format — making it super easy and simple to apply to affected areas. No need to massage it in. The formula also absorbs into the skin very quickly and doesn’t leave the skin feeling greasy afterward.
However, it all falls apart at the CBD content — which is supposed to be the primary active ingredient in this formula. With a potency so low, we’re unable to recommend this product for the intended uses.
The Active Relief Roll-on has been formulated for athletes and active adults to help them get relief from localized pain, stiffness, and overworked muscles. It’s designed to offer an instant cooling effect when applied to the skin. Although this is certainly the case, the CBD content of this product is far too low for us to reasonably recommend this product for the uses it’s marketed for.
This product contains 450 mg of CBD per bottle, mixed with a proprietary blend of natural herbal extracts and menthol.
The roll-on format of this CBD topical makes it easy to apply to affected areas. Simply roll it around the muscles or joints like a deodorant stick and you’re done.

HempMeds is one of the first brands that introduced CBD products to the US market. Being part of Medical Marijuana Inc., this company produces its own CBD extracts and also owns several other brands, such as Dixie Botanicals, Cibaderm, and Real Scientific Hemp Oil (RSHO).
In short, HempMeds sells every type of CBD product you can imagine — offering CBD oil drops, edibles, isolates, tinctures, capsules, vapes, concentrates, and skincare products. They even offer transdermal CBD patches, nasal sprays, and other niche product types through some of the company’s sub-brands.
It’s difficult to define the character of the company because, on the one hand, they sell regular CBD products that are affordable for most people; but on the other hand, they also offer premium products with impressive formulas. HempMeds does just about everything.
The HempMeds Active Relief Roll-on comes in a 90 ml bottle with a rolling ball set on the top, allowing you to precisely apply the herbal extract onto the area of skin where you feel discomfort.
To apply the topical, you must press the ball against the skin and rub it gently, evenly dispersing the hemp extract to the affected area. HempMeds recommends using the Active Relief Roll-on up to four times a day.
The Active Relief Roll-on is meant for external use only. Because the product contains alcohol, it’s important that you keep it away from excess heat or open flame.
People with sensitive skin, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women, are advised to consult with a doctor before use. The product shouldn’t be applied to wounds or damaged skin, nor should it be used with other ointments.
The price for every milligram of CBD in this topical’s formula is $0.11. This is a great price on the market, additionally, there are other ingredients in the formula that add to the value of the topical.
Many other CBD companies offer a cooling topical CBD option with additional ingredients — however, most clock in around the $0.50 or less per milligram of CBD. This makes this product cheaper than average.

Active Relief Roll-on 3 oz — 450 mg | $51.00 | 450 mg | $0.11 |
This product offers an average potency when compared with similar CBD roll-ons on the market. Each 3-ounce container (90 mL) contains 450 mg of CBD — which is around 5 mg per mL. We like to see products like this offer at least 3 mg per mL.
There are other ingredients in this formula that add to the effect profile — but as a topical CBD product, 5 mg/mL can be a bit weak in moderate to severe conditions. If you are looking for a stronger CBD topical, we recommend you check out the CBD Rapid Cooling Cream by Medterra which offers a similar cooling action with up to 7.5 mg per mL.

HempMeds provides thorough information about its hemp source via its website. They import hemp plants from European farmers from countries that are members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a European entity promoting good manufacturing practices in member countries.
HempMeds hemp is non-GMO and has been grown without using pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers.
The company broadly discusses the triple lab testing system they use for each of its products. First, the hemp from which they source CBD is tested in Europe throughout the growing season and after the harvest. Then, the hemp is put under another lab analysis once it makes it to the USA to check if cannabinoid levels are consistent and ensure there are no contaminants in the extract. Finally, the end product is tested once again for potency and purity before it’s made available for sale.
This three-level testing gives these products an incredible level of transparency. HempMeds is a leader in the CBD industry in this regard and we hope to see other companies follow in the wake of this thorough testing process.
The Active Relief Roll-on has a basic formula containing hemp extract, a proprietary herbal blend, and menthol. It works well for cooling inflamed areas and soothing pain, even though it doesn’t offer much potency.
Menthol is very popular for its cooling and analgesic properties, so it pleases us to see there’s a 5% menthol extract in the Active Relief Roll-on. HempMeds claims you only need to rub a thin film over affected areas and wait for the topical to absorb in order to experience the desired effects — no need to massage the product into your skin.
The Active Relief Roll-on has a very concise list of components proprietary herbal ingredients such as CBD, menthol, licorice, jojoba oil, and peony extracts.
HempMeds offers free shipping on all orders over $100. This is the only information provided by the company. There are no details about delivery methods or expected delivery times.
HempMeds allows refunds if you return your order within 14 days. The product must remain unused and unopened — the customer will receive a full refund except for the shipping fee.
All in all, we can’t recommend the Active Relief Roll-on. The potency of CBD used in this formula is much too low to realistically offer all the benefits attributed to this cannabinoid. There are other ingredients in the formula, such as licorice, peony, and menthol that add to the effects — but we’re not convinced this is enough to offer the level of benefits the company advertises this product to have.
Despite the low potency of this product, HempMeds charges the same amount for this product as a high-potency CBD topical — giving this particular topical a very poor value. You’ll be spending about $0.11 for every milligram of CBD in the bottle — which is at least twice what other CBD companies are selling.
Instead, we recommend going with Medterras Rapid Relief Cooling Cream.
