Cannuka CBD Calming Eye Balm

Cannuka products are made with CBD and manuka honey, two ingredients Cannuka claims are miracles for tired or distressed skin. Cannuka’s ingredient list is wholesome and plant or bee-based, but unfortunately lacks the CBD potency we were hoping for.

The CBD Calming Eye Balm may be an excellent cosmetic product for those wanting to supplement their beauty regime, but not a potent CBD treatment for under-eye care.

Price/Value 3/5

Although the CBD Calming Eye Balm contains a host of great ingredients, we believe it’s expensive for what it is, and especially for what the company claims it can do.

Furthermore, Cannuka doesn’t make it clear how much Manuka honey is used in the formula, so it’s not clear precisely what customers are paying such a high price for.

CBD Potency 2/5

With only 1.15 mg/mL CBD concentration, this product can’t be considered potent — especially for a focused under-eye cream.

For this reason, the CBD Calming Eye Balm is more suitable as a cosmetic product than a medicinal CBD product.

Hemp Source 3/5

The hemp source isn’t mentioned on Cannuka’s website. The customer service team didn’t respond to emails when we asked them either.

The CBD isolate used to manufacture Cannuka products comes from a Colorado-based company — Advanced Plant Processing. This company’s website also doesn’t advertise the hemp source but does offer third-party testing for the potency and purity of this product.

Purpose/Uses 3/5

Overall, this product is purely cosmetic. It isn’t concentrated enough to leverage the real benefits of a CBD topical lotion. It also has the same formula as multiple other Cannuka products sold under different specializations.

With that said, the formula does include some great ingredients and feels nice on the skin

Product Variations 3/5

There are no other variations for this product — and although the company does sell other specialty products for different forms of skincare, the formulations are often repeated.

Formula 3/5

Cannuka’s formula for this product is reliable, perhaps not for its purpose, but as an all-round skin balm, it’s great. The ingredients are naturally-derived and are focused around both the CBD and the manuka honey — both of which are highly revered for their beneficial effects on the skin.

Cannuka CBD Calming Eye Balm Review

Article By
Editorial Staff , last updated on November 16, 2021

The Cannuka brand spawned from Michael and Kelly Bumgarner’s wish to combine the therapeutic effects of CBD with those of Manuka honey.

Kelly’s knowledge as a dermatologist and Michael’s self-declared passion for CBD brought Cannuka to the USA, straight out of Ohio.

The Cannuka CBD Calming Eye Balm is precisely that — a topical formula combining CBD and Manuka honey.

Unfortunately, this little jar of balm only contains 15 mg CBD, and the amount of Manuka inside the product isn’t advertised — so it’s not clear how much the company’s mission is actually manifested in this product.

In this review, we’ll break down the cost of the CBD Calming Eye Balm, its CBD potency, and discuss who might be best suited to this sort of product.

Let’s break it down.

Overview: Cannuka CBD Calming Eye Balm

The Cannuka CBD Calming Eye Balm is a topical lotion to be used around the eyes. It has a very natural formula, containing bases such as coconut oil and beeswax, and enriched with essential oils, fruit extracts and of course, CBD.

In general, the formula contains only things that are good for the skin — grapefruit extract, rosehip oil, hemp seed oil, and shea butter. Many of the company’s other products have very similar formulas.

For a topical CBD product containing only 15 mg CBD, it’s overpriced. The tiny 13 mL jar costs $38.00, and with only 15 mg CBD and an unknown amount of Manuka honey, it’s heavy damage for an eye cream. The cost per milligram of CBD is over $2.50 — which far exceeds the average for a product like this.

The CBD used in this product is in isolate form. Although it’s not advertised on the company website, Cannuka sources its CBD isolate from Advanced Plant Processing in Colorado. This is one of the larger contract manufacturing CBD suppliers in America.

Aside from that, Cannuka provides no information about the source of their ingredients. It’s a mystery as to where the hemp is grown to manufacture the CBD isolate used in Cannuka products.

We attempted to contact the customer service team multiple times with no avail.

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
  • Made with natural ingredients
  • Combines CBD with manuka honey — another popular therapeutic ingredient
  • CBD potency is low
  • Not the best value for money
  • Formulated with the same recipe as multiple other Cannuka products

Key Features and Benefits

Naturally-Derived Ingredients

The only appreciable quality the Cannuka CBD Eye Balm has on offer is the fact that it’s made from plant and bee-derived ingredients. The formula has only one chemical ingredient, namely potassium sorbate, that is used a preservative. And, in all fairness, a preservative is necessary for a cosmetic product made from natural bases.

The formula is solid and well rounded in terms of essential oils and waxes that are good for the skin. It contains grapefruit extract, which is known to be beneficial for an array of different skin conditions.

And, of course, it contains the proprietary formula: CBD and Manuka honey. These are all great ingredients for the skin.

About the Company: Cannuka

Cannuka’s name is fitting for its manifesto, but perhaps not for its products. Cannuka was founded by Michael Bumgarner, a self-professed lover, and advocate of the therapeutic properties of CBD.

His wife, Kelly, is a dermatologist, and no doubt the brains heavily involved with the product formulation.

Together, they decided that blending CBD with Manuka honey would do wonders for aging or blemished skin, and that’s how Cannuka came to be.

The company’s manifesto is solid, and Manuka honey mixed with CBD makes for a cocktail of anti-inflammatory, therapeutic potential.

Cannuka is secretive about the source of CBD isolate and where the hemp for their CBD isolate comes from. On one product, they don’t even advertise how much CBD is used (Cannuka CBD After Sun Care) — and never do they advertise the concentration of manuka honey in their products.

There’s also very little to be learned about the company aside from what’s contained in Cannuka’s “Our Story” page.

Overall, the company seems guarded, non-transparent, and secretive. Especially for an emerging CBD company — and especially in the current American CBD climate — it’s better to be open and transparent to customers about the source of ingredients.

Who Should Consider Using CBD Calming Eye Balm?

Cannuka recommends the CBD Calming Eye Balm be used as part of a beauty regime. And that seems to be who it’s most suitable for.

This product is not really for those searching for the therapeutic value of CBD. The CBD concentration is too low for it to be considered a therapeutic product. It’s more of a cosmetic product than anything else.

Price/Value

Overall, the Cannuka CBD Calming Eye Balm is expensive, and consumers get very little value for money. We can’t say the same for the cosmetics industry as a whole, but if it’s CBD you’re looking for, $38 is a hefty price to pay for a product like this.

CBD Potency

The CBD potency of Cannuka’s eye balm doesn’t stack up either. It contains just 1.15 mg/mL, which is on the low-end compared to other products in its class.

Hemp Source

Cannuka doesn’t extract their own CBD, and that’s perhaps why they don’t talk about the hemp source on their website. CBD isolate is used in Cannuka’s products, which is sourced from a Colorado company called Advanced Plant Processing (APP).

Even after checking out APP’s website, there are still no clues on where the hemp is sourced. We attempted contact with Cannuka multiple times with no response.

Purpose/Uses

This is really where it becomes clear that Cannuka’s products are a little bit expensive and frankly, overrated.

The Cannuka CBD Calming Eye Balm has almost the exact same formula as their CBD Skin Balm and their CBD Hydrating Lip Balm. For the record, the only difference between all three products is the CBD concentration. So it isn’t clear what makes this product specifically good for use around the eyes.

It’s quite apparent that Cannuka has taken the same recipe, put it in different packaging, and sold them off as various products. The way we see it, this is dishonest and misleading for customers. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the marketing book.

Formulation/Ingredients

The ingredients used by Cannuka in the CBD Calming Eye Balm are all-natural — designed specifically to support the health of the skin.

Key Ingredients:

  • Beeswax
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Shea butter
  • Hemp seed oil
  • Orange peel butter
  • Vitamin E
  • Rosehip oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Distilled water
  • Potassium sorbate
  • Grapefruit extract
  • Manuka honey
  • CBD isolate (15 mg)

Cannuka’s Shipping & Returns Policy

Cannuka offers a customer satisfaction guarantee. If customers aren’t 100% satisfied, they can contact the customer service team and apply for a refund, replacement, or full credit. It seems that Cannuka decides which one it will be according to their Terms and Conditions.

Returns can also be made for damaged or defective goods. Again, this has to be done through their customer service team. Judging by how irresponsive they were with regards to the hemp source, we predict this to be equally as difficult.

Shipping is calculated at checkout, and so varies from country to country. It seems as though shipping is a flat $7.50 in the USA unless expedited shipping is selected. For worldwide shipping, it can cost as much as $87 to Australia, for example

The Final Verdict: Expensive Beauty Product, Not Therapeutic CBD Topical

Although Cannuka genuinely uses wholesome, natural ingredients in their products, they incorrectly market this product as a CBD cosmetic. It’s more of a cosmetic product with a hint of CBD, and we can’t say that CBD is a feature of this product — it’s a bonus.

The price is expensive if CBD is what customers are looking for. If it’s a beauty product customers are searching for, this may or may not be good value — we’re not exactly in the beauty business.

Finally, the company’s secrecy surrounding the hemp source contributes to the lack of trustworthiness. On top of that, there’s virtually no innovation in formulas between the products this company offers — they have more or less the same formulation but claim to be better for different things.
