It\u2019s what you probably have in your mind\u2019s eye when you think of weed \u2014 a green, somewhat conical nugget that can be ground up and smoked.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s fresh, it\u2019s usually covered in sticky dust made up of trichomes, which are hair-like fibers that make <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/hemp-vs-marijuana\/\">hemp and marijuana flowers<\/a> taste and smell great (and contribute to their effectiveness).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there\u2019s another type of dusty coating that can appear similar but has negative implications: Mold. Because cannabis flower is moist when it\u2019s harvested, mold can grow on the inside and outside of the bud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here are a few ways to spot mold on your weed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It has a white-ish coating, as opposed to a purple, gold, or green color.<\/li><li>It looks dull as opposed to sparkly.<\/li><li>It smells of mildew.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, moldy cannabis flower usually isn\u2019t deadly and is preventable if you use proper storage techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Why Mold Happens on Weed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mold can occur on anything with moisture, including plants before and after they\u2019re harvested. Even if you think you\u2019ve cut off the mold, it might go deeper than you think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, most people will probably be fine if they smoke moldy weed by accident once or twice. But if you know how to spot it, check your weed, especially if it\u2019s been sitting for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>What Happens If I Smoke Moldy Cannabis Flower?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As we\u2019ve mentioned, it\u2019s unlikely that you\u2019ll be seriously harmed by moldy cannabis flowers. However, even if you don\u2019t have an autoimmune disorder, it can make you cough, wheeze, and even vomit. Of course, if you\u2019re allergic to mold, the impacts will be greater and could last longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>How to Store Weed So It Doesn\u2019t Get Moldy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lucky for you, the weed container market has never been better. There are thousands of products out there to help you <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/hemp-flower\/how-to-store\/\">store your cannabis flower<\/a> so it doesn\u2019t get moldy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re shopping for weed storage options, always keep these three things in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>1. Always store flowers in a cool, dry place<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your weed container in a dark cabinet that doesn\u2019t fluctuate in temperature throughout the day. Using a glass or plastic container keeps your cannabis flower dry and cool, assuming it isn\u2019t exposed to the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the eggplant and tomatoes we talked about would last longer in the freezer, it isn\u2019t the same for weed. Your freezer has lots of moisture in it, and weed can still grow mold in that environment. Plus, the freezer can break off all the trichomes that make smoking and vaping flowers so pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>2. Store flowers out of the sunlight<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UV rays can dry out your flower if it\u2019s stored in the sun without an airtight container. On the other hand, if your airtight container heats up from the sun, condensation will form inside from the moisture in the buds, making an ideal environment for mold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dark glass and plastic containers may help with this by not allowing the heat to pass through the container, but it\u2019s always best to store your weed out of the sunlight, even if it\u2019s in a container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>3. Control the amount of moisture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Too much moisture leads to mold, but if there isn\u2019t any moisture in your container, you\u2019ll notice that your flower will get dry and brittle pretty quickly. The easiest fix to this is using an airtight container in conjunction with a moisture packet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moisture packets feed off of the natural moisture in the container, as well as the moisture in the packet, to keep the environment from drying out. You can\u2019t cook or bake mold off of weed, and there\u2019s always a chance that there\u2019s more you can\u2019t see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mold is super prolific once it starts growing, so if there\u2019s more than a small trace, it\u2019s best to trash the moldy flower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The best way to deal with moldy weed is to prevent it<\/strong>. Unfortunately, it\u2019s possible that you buy weed from the dispensary that comes with mold on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice mold on your weed within a few days of buying it from a dispensary, contact the dispensary and ask for a replacement item. If it\u2019s been more than a few days, it\u2019s possible the mold started growing after you took it home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>With that in mind, it\u2019s best to get in the practice of unpackaging, inspecting, and transferring your weed right after bringing it home from the dispensary<\/strong>. It\u2019s best to prevent moldy weed with proper storage in the first place.
