{"id":28444,"date":"2021-04-04T01:13:19","date_gmt":"2021-04-04T01:13:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/?p=28444"},"modified":"2022-01-07T11:40:44","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T11:40:44","slug":"delta-10-thc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/delta-10-thc\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Delta 10 THC?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>What is Delta 10 THC?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Delta 10 THC is an isomer of delta 8 THC and delta 9 THC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isomers are molecules that have the same chemical <em>formula<\/em> but a different arrangement of atoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can think of it like ice cream. All ice cream is still ice cream, but it comes in many different flavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delta 8, 9, and 10 THC are essentially different flavors of the THC molecule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other versions of THC that are possible as well \u2014 including delta 2, delta 3, delta 6, and delta 7 THC \u2014 however, most of them are very poorly understood and aren\u2019t available in the mainstream market quite yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delta 9 is the only form that\u2019s produced in any meaningful supply in the natural hemp plant. All other isomers, including delta 10, require chemical intervention to produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Delta<\/em> refers to the position of the double bond in THC\u2019s chemical structure. Delta 10 has the double bond in the tenth position, while delta 9 has this bond in the ninth position \u2014&nbsp;and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the only difference between each version of THC. It\u2019s not a big enough difference to fundamentally change the effects you can expect from THC. There has yet to be any formal clinical studies exploring the effects (and safety) of this cannabinoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are a lot of anecdotal reports from people who have tried it (including our own experience).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here are some of the characteristics noted for this particular cannabinoid so far:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u039410 is roughly half as potent as \u03949 THC<\/li><li>\u039410 is more stimulating &amp; nootropic<\/li><li>\u039410 is better than \u03949 for promoting flow states, creativity, euphoria, &amp; focus<\/li><li>\u039410 appears to have less side effects than \u03949<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These effects are likely going to make delta 10 THC a staple in the cannabis industry over the next couple of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we could place delta 8, 9, and 10 on a scale, we&#8217;d have delta 8 on the far left (sedative and relaxing) and delta 10 on the far right (stimulating and nootropic). Delta 9 would be somewhere in between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-180x120.png 180w, https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-283x189.png 283w, https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-54x36.png 54w, https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-330x220.png 330w, https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-420x280.png 420w, https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-74x49.png 74w, https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15-45x30.png 45w, https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/04\/15.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many other THC analogs on the market today too, which range substantially in terms of potency: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/thcc\/\">THCC<\/a> \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;non-psychoactive<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/thcv\/\">THCV<\/a> \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;about half as potent as delta 10 THC<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/delta-8-thc\/\">Delta 8 THC<\/a> \u2014<\/strong> roughly equivalent potency to delta 10 THC but with more relaxing effects<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/hhc\/\">HHC<\/a> \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;about 30% stronger than delta 10 THC<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/thc-oil\/\">Delta 9 THC<\/a> \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;nearly twice as strong as delta 10 THC<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/thc-o\/\">THC-O-Acetate<\/a> \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;roughly 6 times as potent as delta 10 THC and much more sedating<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/thcp\/\">THCP<\/a> \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;more than 60 times as potent as delta 10 THC<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3>The History of Delta 10 THC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Delta 10 was first discovered in 1984 by a man named Raphael Mechoulam. He published a paper that outlined the synthesis of this molecule \u2014 but the method required the use of harsh and toxic chemicals that basically rendered the final product unusable [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/1984\/p1\/p19840002881\/unauth#!divAbstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a>]. This same paper highlighted delta 2, delta 3, and delta 6 THC isomers as well \u2014 none of which have been studied in any detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until recently that delta 10 THC was re-discovered. A company called <a href=\"https:\/\/fusionfarms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fusion Farms<\/a> discovered it after they inadvertently ordered a large amount of cannabis biomass contaminated by fire retardants from nearby wildfires in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unaware of the contamination, the team processed the hemp as usual. They used a method of distillation and recrystallization to isolate the <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/cannabinoids\/\">cannabinoids<\/a>. During the process, the team noticed a strange formation of crystal in their extract \u2014 like nothing they\u2019ve ever seen before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After running a test to see what chemical they isolated, the scan identified it as <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/cbc\/\">CBC (cannabichromene)<\/a>, but the crystal formations looked nothing like the results they\u2019ve obtained previously while extracting pure CBC. So the team kept digging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It took several months to identify the substance, but it was eventually identified as delta 10 THC with the help of a technology called nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). This technology is used to identify the chemical structure of unknown molecules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It turns out it was the exposure to the fire retardant that led to the conversion of delta 9 to delta 10 THC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An organic chemist by the name of Josh Josh Jones, Ph.D. (owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jonesinglabs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jonesing Labs LLC<\/a>), set out to find a safer and more reliable method of converting delta 9 THC into the delta 10 isomer using catalysts and a food-grade radical initiator. This was a very innovative idea in cannabinoid science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a lot of trial and error, Josh eventually polished a method that produced a yield of about 70\u201380% delta 10 THC. There\u2019s currently a patent pending on the process, filed in combination by Fusion Farms and Jonesing Labs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How Much Delta 10 THC Do I Take?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The optimal dose of delta 10 THC is still undetermined. We know it\u2019s not as potent as delta 9 THC \u2014 but we still don\u2019t have a clear understanding of how far off it is. Most people who have tried delta 10 report it to be roughly similar to that of delta 8 \u2014 which is about half as strong as an equivalent dose of the delta 9 isomer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Using this metric, we estimate the working dosage range of delta 10 THC is somewhere between 20 mg and 60 mg.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with any cannabinoid, the dose is likely to fluctuate depending on the individual\u2019s size and weight, experience level (tolerance), and individual metabolic factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever trying a new compound for the first time, it&#8217;s wise to start with a very low dose \u2014 around 5 mg \u2014 and wait an hour to see how your body responds. Technically, it\u2019s legal under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/congressional-testimony\/hemp-production-and-2018-farm-bill-07252019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2018 Farm Bill<\/a> as long as it\u2019s made from <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/hemp-vs-marijuana\/\">hemp versus marijuana<\/a>. Hemp is defined as any <em>Cannabis sativa <\/em>plant that produces 0.3% THC or less. Marijuana is anything that makes more than 0.3% THC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem is that delta 10 THC isn\u2019t produced in any meaningful supply in hemp. In fact, even marijuana doesn\u2019t produce any meaningful concentrations of the delta 10 isomer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make delta 10 THC extracts, labs first need to convert CBD that\u2019s been legally extracted from hemp and convert it into delta 10. There are ways of converting CBD directly to delta 10, but they\u2019re inefficient. It\u2019s easier to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/how-to-make-delta-8-thc\/\">convert CBD to delta 8<\/a> or delta 9, and then convert this into delta 10 using the method outlined by Josh in his patent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DEA (<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/dea-schedule-1\/\">Drug Enforcement Administration<\/a>) recently stated that any synthetically-derived THC is considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/d\/2020-17356\/p-31\">Schedule I substance<\/a> on a federal level. Whether delta 10 is considered \u201csynthetically-derived\u201d is up for debate. It\u2019s more likely that delta 10 is considered \u201cnaturally-derived\u201d because it\u2019s a compound found in nature, even though commercial products are made in a lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This issue is fairly complex and it remains unclear how the federal government views these different isomers of THC. We&#8217;ve covered this topic in more detail in our <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/is-delta-8-thc-legal\/\">delta 8 THC legal guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several states have specific laws that ban all forms of THC \u2014 including delta 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently 15 states that have passed their own recreational cannabis laws. These states permit the sale of marijuana derivatives and allow the sale of THC extracts of various kinds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 4 exceptions here that have specifically banned synthetic isomers of THC; this includes <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/alaska\/\">Alaska<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/arizona\/\">Arizona<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/colorado\/\">Colorado<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/montana\/\">Montana<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legal marijuana states:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li><s>Alaska<\/s><\/li><li><s>Arizona<\/s><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/california\/\">California<\/a><\/li><li><s>Colorado<\/s><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/illinois\/\">Illinois<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/maine\/\">Maine<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/massachusetts\/\">Massachusetts<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/michigan\/\">Michigan<\/a><\/li><li><s>Montana<\/s><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/nevada\/\">Nevada<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/new-jersey\/\">New Jersey<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/oregon\/\">Oregon<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/south-dakota\/\">South Dakota<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/vermont\/\">Vermont<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/states\/washington\/\">Washington<\/a><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2>Will Delta 10 THC Show Up On A Drug Test?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most drug tests are limited in what they can detect. They\u2019re designed to detect specific substances that are deemed illegal or otherwise problematic (such as performance enhancement substances in professional athletic associations).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtually all drug tests look for THC. These tests aren\u2019t sophisticated enough to differentiate between delta 9 THC and other forms of THC&nbsp;\u2014 which means if you\u2019ve consumed delta 10 THC, you\u2019re most likely going to register a positive for THC and fail the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re regularly subjected to drug testing, we recommend you avoid using delta 10 THC unless you have a specific medical exception or live in a legal state (except for the four states mentioned above).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve been using delta 10 THC and have a drug test scheduled, it\u2019s important to stop using the substance immediately and begin a detox program. Ideally, you should stop using any form of THC at least a month before the test to ensure it\u2019s completely eliminated from the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>There are some (unconfirmed) reports that another THC analog, called HHC, is able to avoid detection on standard drug tests because it isn&#8217;t converted to 11-hydroxy-THC \u2014&nbsp;which is what most drug tests look for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycbd.com\/en\/delta-8-thc-drug-test\/\">Will Delta 8 THC Make Me Fail A Drug Test?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How to Use Delta 10 THC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Delta 10 THC isn\u2019t widely available, but we expect to see it available in the same forms you\u2019ll find CBD and other THC products. This includes distillates, tinctures, capsules, gummies, vapes, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We may even see delta 10 rich hemp flowers in the future.
