The first step to finding CBD products worth your money is to look at the company that makes them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CBD is just starting to become mainstream, and the industry is already worth billions of dollars. So it\u2019s no surprise that there\u2019s an influx of new companies stepping into the market. Some of these companies have excellent integrity \u2014 others are simply here to make a quick buck in a trending new industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve outlined six key areas of focus to assess the quality of CBD companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.\nMission\/Charity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

We value companies\nwith a strong mission statement, corporate transparency, and those who\ncontribute to the community through charities or discount programs for those\nwho need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generic mission statements like \u201cwe\u2019re dedicated to getting CBD into\nthe hands of everyone who needs it\u201d \naren\u2019t going to cut it. All companies strive for profits \u2014 we\u2019re looking\nfor companies who go above and beyond by offering a real reason for doing the\nthings they do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, companies without any information on the executive or\nproduct team score poorly in this category. We don\u2019t like seeing faceless\ncompanies because it\u2019s harder to hold them accountable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies that score highest in this metric have a mission statement\nthat\u2019s genuine and believable, donate to charities related to their cause, and\nprovide a clear description of the executive team behind the company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Hemp\nSource<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

CBD companies need to\nsource the raw hemp they use to make their products from somewhere. The source\nand quality of the hemp a company uses have a big impact on the overall quality\nof the final product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hemp is a highly\nresilient plant \u2014 it\u2019s naturally resistant to many common pests and chemicals.\nAs a result, it can be grown in areas contaminated with heavy metals,\npesticides, or other toxic materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These potentially\nharmful materials can end up in the final products \u2014 and ultimately in our\nbodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies that source\norganic, or high-quality hemp and provide public third-party testing to prove\nthe quality of this hemp will score the highest in this metric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If no mention of hemp\nsource is listed, and customer service representatives fail to provide proof of\nhemp source, the company will score poorly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.\nProduct Range<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This metric is\ndesigned to assess the array of products in a company\u2019s lineup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies with\ndiverse product options will score highly in this metric \u2014 even if the company\nspecializes in a particular niche of the CBD industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, it\u2019s all about\ncontext. A company that specializes in CBD topicals, and has a broad range of\nunique products, may score similarly to a one-stop-shop with every CBD product\ntype under the sun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies that score\npoorly in this category have a limited range of products that serve the same\nfunction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.\nInnovation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Companies that innovate are the drivers of the industry. Innovation is an excellent indication of a company\u2019s longevity and drive to produce top-notch products \u2014 as opposed to fly-by-night companies scavenging on the innovation of others to make money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re looking for new\nand exciting CBD products, advanced extraction methods, and thorough\nthird-party testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Innovation means\ndoing things that no one else is trying, and staying up-to-date with modern\ntechniques and manufacturing practices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.\nSafety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although CBD is a safe compound, we look for companies that are transparent about potential side-effects and list accurate and reasonable dosing recommendations. We also look at whether or not each product is regularly tested by a third-party lab to confirm the absence of harmful contaminants like heavy metals and mycotoxins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We feel it\u2019s\nunethical for companies to hide or ignore this important information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies that don\u2019t\nabide by the advertising guidelines put in place by the FDA and FTC will\nreceive a poor score in this category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.\nCustomer Service<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We evaluate the\ncustomer service reps of each CBD company on our site through email, phone, or\nthe company\u2019s chatbox. We ask questions regarding their products, manufacturing\nprocesses, return policy, and more to learn about the customer service\nexperience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies that fail\nto respond to our emails or phone calls after multiple attempts receive the\nlowest score. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies that score\nhighly in this metric respond quickly, answer our questions thoroughly, and\nhave a rock-solid return policy of at least 30-days or more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evaluation\nCriteria for CBD Products<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As with our company\nreview process, we\u2019ve developed a system for assessing CBD products of all\ndifferent types \u2014 a process we\u2019ve sharpened and re-evaluated many times\nthroughout our research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of the products\nwe\u2019ve tried and tested were excellent \u2014 but there are quite a few that failed\nto live up to their expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our product review\nsystem is based on six key sets of criteria; <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.\nPrice\/Value<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We compare the cost\nof the product with other metrics such as the quality of the hemp, third-party\ntesting, the price per mg of CBD, and the ingredients included in the formula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A high-value oil\nusually has a low price per mg CBD within its category and uses high-grade\ningredients. But this isn\u2019t always the case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Products that may be\nconsidered expensive<\/em>, can still come\nat a high value and rank higher than cheaper products in its category. This is because our metrics assess value<\/em> \u2014 not just price.<\/strong> This takes\ninto account other ingredients included in the formula and quality of\ningredients used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that said, there\nare some generalizations that can be made on price \u2014 which we take into\nconsideration to help us determine the true value<\/em>\nof a product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We prefer\nhigh-potency products in general \u2014 but look for products with a potency that\nmatches its intended uses. Not all CBD products need to be ultra-high potency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Products that have a\nhigher potency may still rank below products of lower potency \u2014 depending on\nthe context of the product \u2014 like how it\u2019s meant to be used, what form it comes\nin, and what else is included in the formula. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The addition of\ningredients with synergistic effects to CBD will also affect a product’s\npotency score. When a formula uses clever synergy through other herbs or\nnutritional supplements, it can be argued that the formula will have a stronger\neffect than an equal or slightly higher potency to pure CBD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best hemp is\nlocally sourced, grown with organic farming practices, and undergoes rigorous\nthird-party testing to prove the quality and purity advertised on the bottle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hemp source\nmetric is a crucial component of our review process because of the potential\nfor contamination in the hemp plant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hemp is a\nbioaccumulator \u2014 which means it has the ability to absorb and accumulate\ncompounds from the air and soil around it. This is true for both the good stuff\n(nitrogen, calcium, phosphorous, etc) and the bad stuff (cadmium, lead,\nmercury, arsenic, etc). The only way to be sure none of these compounds are\npresent in the final CBD extract is to use hemp that was clean, to begin with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We reserve\nfull-points in this metric to companies that source organic hemp certified by\nthe USDA \u2014 or equivalent certification and have all final extracts tested by\nindependent labs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s only a small\nhandful of companies currently operating in this space that have earned 5 stars\nin this category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.\nPurpose\/Uses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This rating takes the\nproduct type into account \u2014 we ask the question; \u201cdoes this form of CBD match\nthe intended uses of the product?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We consider whether the product has a clearly defined purpose and if the formula, potency, and delivery method chosen effectively matches that purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Products that score\nhighly in this metric include other beneficial herbs or supplements, and most\noften include a higher potency of CBD than average. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Product\nVariations\/Flavors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Here, we assess the\nvariations of each product \u2014 giving consumers a choice of flavors, potencies,\nor other alternative forms of the product designed to help customize the user\nexperience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not all products need\na multitude of options to be useful \u2014 so this is also taken into account\ndepending on the type of product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an example, a\nproduct with a clearly defined niche and purpose may still score highly in this\ncategory \u2014 even though it may only have two or three variations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also take into\naccount the company’s other products to see if any overlap. Many companies\nselling topicals, for example, will only offer one size and potency of a\nparticular product \u2014 but also makes similar formulas intended for different\nuses. These products will score higher on this metric than a company with just\none topical, in one potency and size option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.\nFormulation\/Ingredients<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With this metric, we look at the ingredients list of the product in question. If the product is poorly formulated or contains low-quality ingredients, it will receive a low score. This includes using ingredients that are either unsafe or don\u2019t add any benefit to the overall effects of the product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some products are\ndesigned to be simple CBD-only supplements, so this is taken into account as\nwell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Products that score\nthe highest in this category usually contain 4\u20138 other ingredients designed to\ncomplement the intended effects of CBD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
